If I want avos to ripen fast I just leave them on the kitchen counter where they get a bit of sun/heat. To slow the process I keep them in the fridge.

You are doing it all fuscking wrong. There's a right way and a wrong way. This way is idiotic.
Just save yourself the trouble and hold them out the window for the monkeys.

Bananas produce ethylene which can help ripen other fruits.

Also bad to keep certain pot plants near ripening fruit
