I am a new ADSL subscriber, i got 192(R329) and a 3Gb ISP(R250).Now today I get a call from Telkom saying that my account is R1800. How can this be i dont use the line for calls and I should be paying about R580.

Whats going on?
Is there something I dont know about?

Right, your first phone line huh? :D

Luckily I've been through this, and yes, it's shocking they don't tell you. The first month you pay for :

a) Installation
b) Rental
c) Rental a month in advance

So your first month's bill would be R404+(R329*2)+R85+R250(ISP)

Depends if you had to install a new phoneline as well. If you just upgraded your phoneline I think you should be around the figure above, however, if you have a new line, I won't be suprised if it hits 1800.

And no, they dont rip you off, they just convieniently (sp?) forget to tell you you pay a month in advance the first month.

However, I've made 2 applications for a new line and ADSL (cancelled both, I hate wireless technologies) and both times the lady at the other end made sure I knew that they will double charge me (line rental + line rental a month in advance) when it gets installed.

You have now learned, and trust me my friend... you're now more knowledgable than the rest of south africa...

a key thing to remember always buying ANY kind of service... IS ASK QUESTIONS... oh and it doesnt hurt to ask for discount either. I can shave off maybe 5 or 6 grand on a bill, depending on what I buy :P

hey thanks man, i knew about the intallation but i think the rent advance thing is ludicriss, I did ask MANY questions and they never mentioned anything like that, they full of ****. By the way finished my cap today so its even more ****...

shame, I feel for you buddy.

Tell you what, when you go pay your bill.. Go all out at them while holding money in your hand, it will be your freedom to **** at them and tell them how *** they are.. then give them their money..

I tend to give this advice to frustrated customers :D
