At your house, Don't you remember?
Hey Fellas! Whats up?!
My SO and I taking a road trip to Umngazi [On the coast between Port Shepstone and East London] late In July.
This is our first road trip and we are not familiar with the roads and we dont want to drive there with full speed, but enjoy the scenery along the way.

Any suggestions and tips regarding the route, places we can stay or take a detour or places worth visiting will be much appreciated!

Don't drive at night, watch out for the cows, goats, potholes & other idiots on the road.

I second and third this advice- they drive like idiots on that side of the world.

I reckon you pre book a few back packers and go with the flow- it's a great part of the country!

PS: take some basic medical supplies with you, pharmacies can be few and far between.

There were extensive road works between Mthatha and Port St Johns a while back. Stop/Go and detours that kind of thing

Thanks for the info!

So for Now this is the plan:
JHB to Kamberg, Drakensburg.
Straight From Kamberg to Umngazi.
Umngazi to St Lucia
St Lucia to JHB

Any suggestions for attractions on this route?! Or better routes to take and/Or places to stay?!

///
Sorry Im barely relying on google info!

At you staying at Kamberg itself? Its quite a detour for not much around there. An easier berg stop with more attractions would be the Champagne valley (inland from Winterton)

Just choosing random points in the area:

JHB - Kemberg - Umngazi 846KM
JHB - Champagne Valley - Umngazi 942KM

Although extra 100KM is not important if it provides superior experience!

Soooo... :D

What's The best place in and around Drakensburg to stay for 2 nights?!

Depends what you wanna do, but as I said the Champagne / Cathkin valley is the most developed in the berg.
Check out Mountain Splendour, Dragon Peaks, iKhayalamafu Mountain Hideaway, Ema Fweni, or look on accommodation sites

If you are going to drive on a quiet road, buy a pair of those yellow glasses so that you can see better at night, and always travel with a torch, water bottles and TP.

I don't much about the direction you're going, luckily you're not going East London -> Mthatha though, I travel that one fairly often and it's IMHO the most dangerous road in the EC, seen a few nasty accidents there and loads of people driving like clowns. It got a bit better recently as they did quite a lot of roadworks which improved things a bit, road is still really narrow at places though.

Don't mean to scare as I honestly don't know what's like otherside of Mthatha, I guess just be careful.. ;)
