Hi everyone.

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this but I can move it I guess.

My wife, 3yr old and I are emigrating to Belgium in January. We live in Johannesburg and the plan is to spend a couple of weeks with her family in Cape Town and then fly out from there. We're thinking about doing a road trip down to CT at the end of November and we're wondering if anyone has any route they would suggest we take? Time isn't really a huge concern and we were thinking of anything between 3 days and a week.

I'm partial to the JHB -> DBN -> East London -> Cape Town route myself...but I'm not really familiar with the Eastern Cape too much. We might stay with family of mine in Kei Mouth but other than that I have no idea where is nice (or safe) to stay or go through??

That being said, any route suggestions will be investigated.

Thanks in advance.
Devon.

Going through the transkei is unpleasant and not safe. Wouldn't recommend it. If you insist then make sure you hit the towns outside of peak traffic hours. They'd think that's obvious but it's especially the case for the transkei.

Personally I'd go the N3 to Harrismith then across to Ladybrand, Aliwal North and then down the N6 to East London. Don't know about the conditions of the roads, last I heard they were pretty bad through the Free State but a few years ago they were fine.

Oh and the R72 from EL to PE

Vryburg, Kuruman, Upington. Visit Augrabies. Pofadder, Springbok, Vioolsdrift. Say good bye to Namibia.
Come back down, visit Hondeklipbay, Elandsbay, Stompneusbay,
Then Cape Town.

This, did a road trip through the Transkei before - crazy beautiful, crazy dangerous, almost got hi-jacked

Possibly the same guy who tried his luck with me in Mthatha...

But yeah if you want to prolong the drive on the wild side take the R56 from PMB through Richmond and onto N2....

Safe travels on the road trip to ca9e town and enjoy your stay in Belgium.

Don't be a stranger Here.
