Road trip

I love driving as close by the Drakensberg as possible, e.g. we go off the N3 to Underberg when we go to the South Coast. Maybe have a look at that. I just love the mystic feeling of being as close as possible to the Drakensberg - photos don't really do it justice. If you're willing, you can even do Sani Pass itself - haven't done it myself, but it's definitely a dream of mine to do it one day.

Think you need a 4x4 for that one ? Or will this Audi handle the road ? :crylaugh:

Yeah probably, I don't know the details, thought that may only be applicable in the winter when it has snowed. But I drive a Tazz, so haven't been close to considering it. :p

Hey Bunny - My 350Z also needs a road trip. Mind if i tag along ? Will you keep up ?

Sani Pass is the mother of all South African mountain passes. Statistically and in every sense, it out distances, out climbs, and out performs all it's competitors with consummate ease to have become the most iconic gravel pass in SA.

Situated between KZN and Lesotho the pass was built circa 1950 and remains a challenging drive in 4x4 vehicles with all the drama, scenery, bad weather and treacherous conditions expected of a pass with a summit altitude of 2876m ASL. That equates to 9400 feet and at 10,000 feet aircraft need pressurised cabins!

Now you've done it!

Top Gear style elimination rounds including quarter mile, urban track & off-road tank avoidance using live ammunition just after sunrise on Sunday.
Coordinates to be supplied by the guy in the white lab coat..

The internet seems of mixed opinion on who'd win this, one guy recons 350z's are gay so the A6 wins anyway lol.

Come to think of it, having a bit of competition on the road may just make for even funner driving..

Wait, this is actually an amazing idea.

How about a couple of us buy some cheap arse roadworthy cars and do something like this? I think it's a brilliant idea. Then do the SA to Namibia via Botswana. I'll be game for sure!

350's are gay ? WTF.... Mine's so brutal when those twin pipes roar any gay bloke will shyte his pants. :crylaugh:

Pitbull... Like your idea ....

Loads of vehicles one can pick up for around R 25k

Fark me, I'll have a blast on such a trip!!!

Ah I envy you OP.
I've got two small kids. Long distance trips are more stressful than fun right now.

I farking hate it when Fiesta spams the farking section and all the good threads vanish from the front page...

More so I hate that obvious threads like the bike one still aren’t stickied when people have asked many times.

I thought it was tarred recently?

Have you tried panado syrup?
Ha! Not quite needed it yet.
Longest trip we've taken has been the JHB-Durban one, so 6 hours say. It's mostly OK, but there's inevitably an hour where the youngest (around 1) gets antsy, wants to get out the car seat or doesn't want to get back in after a stop.
Ag in a few years it'll be much better.
But yeah, recently had a work thing where I drove to Bela-Bela alone. Was two hours of bliss.

Pro-tip:

Drive long distances at night. The twins when they were younger drove us up the walls on long trips. Started driving through the night and they slept right through. Added bonus is the roads are very quiet. Defeats the purpose of a scenic route though I guess :D

I'd love to! But wife hates driving (or even being a passenger) at night - sad face.
So yeah, we try leave as early as possible, say 4 in the morning - at least then they both fall asleep again at some point in the trip.
Also never thought I'd be that guy that puts those screens on the headrests, but I can definitely see the value they could add - put a movie on and you've bought yourself maybe two hours of quiet time.
Don't get me wrong, part of the trip must be about playing road games. But there's only so much "I spy" a man can take.
That's why I can see myself in a Caravelle - then you can play cards, board games.

I did a week trip in May:
1st day: PTA -> Hopetown (don't trust a GPS, I drove some really bad roads)
2nd day: Hopetown -> Calvinia (Roads were excellent, stayed over at Republic of Rustic A)
3rd day: Calavinia -> Springbok (roads were good)
4th day: Springbok -> Kuruman (roads busy but good)
5th day Kuruman -> PTA (roads busy but good)
