So that's their plan for the alternatives?
Fix a few potholes and promote a train service that only barely covers one quarter of the city?
At least he told us that driving on the new highways will be free... I'm gonna keep him to his word on that!
JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Transport Department on Tuesday announced plans to help those who cannot afford the seemingly inevitable e-tolls, which looks set to be implemented in 2013.
Gauteng Transport MEC Ismail Vadi made the announcement while speaking about the province’s new five-year plan, which will see major changes to the transport sector and road networks.
The MEC said that there will be significant upgrades on major roads to help those who cannot afford the tolls.
He said the department has plans to improve the R101 and the Golden Highway.
Vadi said the department is already repairing potholes on some roads.
The department also wants to provide real alternatives to the highways.
"Everybody will be free to drive on the newly constructed highways, but if you feel that it is splitting your pocket, then we have provided an alternative."
The department said it has identified the Gautrain as a worthy alternative of connecting Pretoria to Johannesburg.
