Yeah I found that out when I went to renew the disk. I wish the dealership I bought it from had explained it properly when I bought it. Problem was I was living in Durban but bought the car in JHB.
 
I've had a few vehicles roadworthied (when buying for wife's business) and they've never checked whether a door can lock or not.
 
Does a vehicle need windows? (side windows.) And is one mirror enough? (Old Series 3 Landy)
 
If the vehicle is newish (less than 3 years?) then change of ownership doesn't require rwc, I think

Otherwise need rwc for change of ownership. Obviously it's on the new owner to ensure rwc, but the buyer might not be willing to buy without rwc done already by seller.
If rwc is needed for change of ownership, the rwc can't be older than 1 year I think.

You obviously bought from some shady dealer - the car HAS to be dealer stocked (into the dealer's name) before it is re-sold. Dealer should have then re-registered in your name prior to sale.

RWC is needed as soon as the car hits 90 days - if we sell a demo in under 3 months it goes straight through, if we wait any longer, RWC is necessary.

They are currently trying to extend RWC to 6 months if the used car has sat on the dealer's floor all that time - probably won't go through, however, as it's a money spinner for the powers that be.

hi i have a question , i bought a car from a guy that did not have the car on his name i later found that a friend of mine used to own the car and the fines still goes to him , i got into contact with my friend and he confirmed that he still gets the fines for the car , does this mean that the car is still in my friends name ? and that i should go to him for the transfer of ownership?

Sounds like it if he is still getting the fines. If the registration certificate has been lost he can apply for a duplicate and hand that to you. Licence fees will need to be paid up if they have lapsed. Once he has it he can hand it to you with the change of ownership forms so that you can register and licence on your name.

You mean you bought a car without any proof of ownership?

Hi, Old thread but I'm at this point now. Buying a bike. A private sale but I want to ensure the sequence of events since I've only bought a car from a dealer once.

List:
 Buyers ID
 Sellers ID
 Original Registration certificate
 Application for Registration and Licensing of Motor Vehicle – the blue form
 Notification of Change of Ownership/Sale of Motor Vehicle – the yellow form
 A current RWC
 Sales agreement

So we fill in all forms and I should get his copy of ID, original registration certificate and Sales agreement from him?
Once I do get the sales agreement do I pay the amount and then must go do the RWC most likely before I go to transfer it else I will have to stand in that line again? The problem I have is what if I pay and theres still fines will he beaccountable for them until I transfer? I doubt there is fines but it is a motorcycle. He only commuted and its a 250cc.

Also from what I understand the buyer and seller must submit a yellow form? Should I submit both with all documentation?

So whats the correct sequence?
