Hi all :)

I am in the process of selling my car privately. It is still financed, and therefore the registration certificate is with the bank.

As part of the sales agreement with the buyer, I will be roadworthying the car. Would Dekra require the registration certificate (ownership certificate) when I take the car for roadworthy?

Thanks in advance!

You should be fine with a copy of the registration document or even just the licensing document.

However to sell the car you will need the papers regardless so either way it's the same problem.

Not needed. Just done the same and the license disc on the car was enough. Give the COR to the buyer.

So if the car is not yet paid in full, what do I need to ask Wesbank for? I would have liked to have gone to Dekra so long tomorrow, but I'm not sure I have the requisite papers to be allowed to have it roadworthied.

I would not release anything to the buyer until you have confirmed the amount is settled in full. If he crashes the the vehicle or it gets stolen you are liable for it.

The buyer needs to pay it in full first and you get the registration documents.

Then only would I bother with roadworthy as it expires in 60 days and if the buyer wastes your time you are going to do it multiple times.

If I recall I got charged R400.

Do either of you know about how long it takes when you wait there for the test to complete? And what a good time of day is to go?

Dekra say 20 to 30 min on their website also pride themselves on a claim that they don't have queues, I don't kniw how they mange that, maybe you hook in advance?

Took me at most an hour the last two times I've done it.

How busy it is would be area dependant. Best check Google Maps.

Mine took about 20 mins

Thanks, 20 mins sounds good. I think I'll get there early whenever I go.

On a related note, do any of you have suggestions for what the best method of payment would be for me to be safe? I obviously would like something that clears on the same day, so that I can have the cash before letting go of the car. The buyer has Investec and I have Standard Bank.

Wanting to pay and take ownership on the same day always sounds like a dodgy deal to me.

Owners can pay the week before and take the car the week after when the bank has sent the registration to you and you've confirmed the money has cleared.

And make sure to have all the forms filled in and copies or their ID and then do your part to de-register the vehicle off your name so it's not your problem down the line of they don't register it in theirs.

What can the buyer get during that time to make sure I'm not scamming them though? I could just as easily take their money and never give them the car. How am I to make them feel comfortable as well, instead of only my holding all the power?

Wouldn't know.

Never had such a problem.

Buyer has always paid and waited. I have the product they know it's real.

Different story if it was out of sight.

Get them to pay directly into the vehicle account and settle it there. Normally takes a day or two to clear. At least that way the new buyer has peace of mind you are not in possession of the money. You have peace of mind that you can confirm the money is in before giving them the car. Any profit on the sale get them to pay to your bank account.

Sign up a one page agreement of sale with your details, buyer, vehicle and agreements on both your responsibilities. It is good to get it transferred ASAP once you have the logbook from the bank.

just a sidenote:

If the buyer is also financing the car you will most probably require a comprehensive dekra test, and not the standard one (I went though this same process a few months ago).

Test is quite expensive +- R2600

True, but I get where they're coming from as well, in that they don't have any assurance they'll actually be getting a car after they pay. I could vanish in the same way they could. So I just wanted to find a middle ground.
