Johannesburg - A robber was shot dead and a security guard wounded in a foiled cash-in-transit robbery at the Elandsfontein train station in Germiston on the East Rand on Wednesday, police said.
Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi said two security guards were loading money into an ATM when two armed men opened fire on them.
The security guards returned fire and one of the men was shot dead. His accomplice fled without taking any money.
One of the security guards was shot in the leg and in the chest near the armpit. A taxi operator was also shot and wounded.
Both were taken to Tembisa hospital for medical attention.
Nhlabathi said the police were searching for the other man and a case of attempted cash-in-transit robbery was being investigated.
"Our investigation is continuing," he said when asked whether an attempted murder charge would be investigated.
