An armed robber was shot dead and six people arrested for public violence after they looted a Somali-owned shop in the Lindelani area of Ntuzuma, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Sunday.
Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that police had opened a case of murder, armed robbery and public violence in connection with the events that happened on Saturday night.
Ahmed Hassan Mohamed, the treasurer of the KwaZulu-Natal Community Council, said robbers held up the Bafana General Dealer shortly before 5pm on Saturday.
"It seems that four people went in and two stayed on guard outside. They took R4000 and about R1500 in airtime."
After the four had left the shop, the two who had been standing guard went into the shop and helped themselves to energy drinks.
"After they went out, a shot was heard, and then there was one dead person."
The shop owner, who was a member of the council, did not own a gun, Zwane said.
Immediately after the shooting, a shop down the road, also owned by a Somali, was looted.
Public order police were called in, dispersed the looters and arrested six people.
The owner of the Thengeduz Mohamed general dealer then removed his stock from his shop under the watchful eye of the police before more looting took place.
A woman, who lives nearby and who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: "We heard the shots. We just dived into our house. Afterwards there was a crowd on the road and things just got out of hand."
She said the shops had remained closed on Sunday morning and she had been unable to buy bread in the morning.
Police at the scene said the man had died in hospital.
Mohamed said he did not believe the incident was related to the shop owners being Somalian, but rather that a gang of youths had chosen to rob the shopkeepers as "they are easy targets".
