TWO Italian businessmen who were dining at the upmarket Marco Paulo restaurant in Mount Edgecombe when a heavily armed gang stormed the premises at the weekend have vowed never to return to South Africa.

They then called 10111 and the call went unanswered.

“We eventually got through and told the operator that there was an armed robbery in progress and they should dispatch help immediately.”

He said the operator told them they had phoned the wrong station and should contact the Phoenix police.

“We told the operator that it was a crisis - that the robbery was happening as we were speaking. There appeared to be no care or cause for alarm.”

Delaney said they asked the operator if she could alert the Phoenix police, but the answer was a curt “no”.

He said after a short while, the robbers had left and Enforce Security guards were the first to arrive on the scene and offer help.

“They cordoned off the area, helped the diners who were in distress and called the paramedics, who arrived about 20 minutes later. The police were the last to arrive, almost 45 minutes later.”

Another day in cANCer country.

Rule 1 - Don't call the police, call private security as the police are useless and usually pitch up much later.

Just about every time I have to deal with some government department on the phone my blood starts boiling, they either don't know jack or it's not their problem and 99% of the time you know these useless oxygen thieves don't give a fsck about 'service' or making any attempt at it.

South Africa will only be saved when there is no more corrupt anc...

Unless your private security is ADT because they'll do jack

This. Taxi tried passing between two cars on a two lane piece of road. Of course that smart idiot's plan failed. Called 911 from my cellphone, in the end they directed me to the wrong department or whatnot. Ended the call and called our local security firm for assistance ... they radioed the police and dispatched their own ambulance service that was first on the scene with the police arriving a bit later.

Not even a brigade of ill tempered chefs armed with Japanese Steel will confront a bunch of thugs wielding AK47s

Cape Town already had that a few years ago at Thaifoon in constantia. Twice . but the gunmen didn't have machine guns.

Should have told the police they smelled dagga, maybe saw some cocaine. That always worked to bring them out in force. Nothing like the prospect of bullying some dope smokers to get them off their butts.

i've never had a bad experience with the police fortunately enough

This is really sad, just think what this will do to the tourist industry!

Have to admit, driving on the N2 in Somerset West direction we saw a guy being attacked by a group, car had a flat and he was trying to change it, we called the police and they were there within a few minutes. So maybe it was just this specific station, but it still gives a very bad image of SA.

Probably nothing. If tourists only went to cushy first world countries South and Central America, Africa and much of Asia would have no tourists.

This. I find the title quite misleading seeing as it was tourists, if I was robbed abroad I would do the same thing. Vok hierdie jol.

one of the things that were bribed to look over when we didn't comply with the FIFA regulations when we hosted the WC in 2010.

We were suppose to have a national emergency number. We gave a bit of money and fifa said ok tourist should all buy cell phones and use that number.

Bribery and Corruption. The ANC Rocks man! look at their bling bling.

Just phone and say you are a member of the Ystergaarde
and
you have just shot and killed 10 blacks including some guys in a convoy of black vehicles with blue lights

See what the response time is then

They'd just say pull the other finger, then they'd go back to sleep.
