Tis is nothing. The Wapadrand substation has been rebuilt twice now with 1st time burnt to the ground and similar event recently. Both times we were without power for days. Of course after four years it still haven't been properly fixed/upgraded by neither DA (current) or ANC before them. But people will keep on voting for both blaming each other.

One really has to wonder whether it's incompetence or deliberate.

Surely people CANNOT be that stupid that they can't fix the substation they've been sent to repair.

At one stage our substation, Roosevelt, went down every, single Friday and yet the same "team" would arrive weekly only to bugger it up again for the next weekend.

I would have sworn it was to earn overtime but I heard these contractors don't get overtime.

The whole contracting and outsourcing thing has been made fashionable but it's a very bad idea for service delivery and reliability on faults.

A contractor who has been sent out to repair something will go out and repair that particular thing and nothing else, so even if there is something he sees that is not in a good condition and will affect the quality and operation of whatever he was fixing, they won't fix that, and they don't have to, just wait until it becomes worse enough and affect the whole thing, it's another job and another pay day.

The whole thing was designed to be a continuous money making scheme, the very fact that most of the contractors are former employees who take packages to come back and contract to the company says it all, the culture of fixing it and fixing it properly is no more.
 
This will just more and more frequent and common place.
Zero maintenance done on this electrical gear...
No spares....
No interest....

Then add to this that many of those who are (supposed to be) overseeing the contractors are either crooked or incompetent, or both, and working in a crippled system so the recipe is set to disaster.
