Roku 3 vs Amazon Fire TV for Netflix

Hi all - my first post of many (hopefully)

I have read everything I can find regarding the Amazon Fire TV and Roku 3 in SA but can't make up my mind in terms of which would be better for my uses - Netflix and YouTube.

How much of a downside is it that one can't set DNS settings on the Roku?

Are there any problems with Amazon Fire TV connecting to Netflix?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Personally I would go with the Fire TV or alternatively a multitude of other Android TV devices. Reason being is that you will be able to load plex for free instead of paying a monthly fee on a Roku. Also you can load XMBC and all the other lovely plugins that come with it.

The Plex app on Roku is a one time fee of $5 (just be careful not to register a new account and go back to it again as you won't get your purchase back :sick:).

If you don't want to pay tho, there are other ways around it but $5 isn't much at all for something that works great.
 
One of my reasons for asking this is I bought a MyGica 585 from Takealot and it was SUPER slow and very poor IMO. Couldn't get YouTube videos to play etc. Don't want to buy a replacement and have the same issues.

I'm assuming the Fire TV is in a different league?
 
Are you sure its just $5? I don't have personal experience, but according to the plex website you will need to be a Plex Pass member to use the app on a Roku meaning there is a monthly fee.

It's a once off fee for the app. Anyone, afaik irrespective of the platform, who wants to use plex's more advanced features needs to pay a subscription.

Being a subscriber will also get you the apps.
 
The fire TV stick is a little slow for my liking and you need a little bit of setup pain to get Kodi onto it and on the home screen. After that tho I have the plex app from Amazon store, Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube and Kodi which all work well. No USB also. Other side loaded apps don't work that we'll with the remote and by spending a out the more can get a better android box like the Mygica 582 (separate air mouse a must).

Yep. You don't need a Plex pass, only for the new preview app which will be released to the public pretty soon I think.
