Morning all. This has most prob been covered a hundred times but just got in the new edition of the roku 2 and set it up with out realizing that it needed to have a dns sorted out on the router. I then went ahead and tried to fix the dns last night on my router which is a Hauwei hg8245h as seen in picture below

huawei-hg8245004_dnsconfig.jpg

I put in a smart dns from smartdnsproxy.com and chose the two closest servers to me as instructed. Once all this was done i rebooted the router and did a factoy reset on the roku.

Here in lies my problem when i went through the process of updating the roku it can get into internet but upon trying to update it pops up a roku error 003. It wont take me past the step of connecting to internet.

I tried all sorts and still no help.

Then went back reset everything back to normal and it works fine again however i can still only access the very limited channels provided we in africa.

Any help on this. I am no the best at these sort of things but can normally find my way around solutions.

Regards

Craig Dickerson

OK, I misread what you typed. For a moment I thought you entered the settings in the Roku and then reset it :)

Are you sure it connects to the internet and not only to your local network? I think it first checks if it can connect to your local network.

If it fails to connect to the Roku servers then the DNS you're using is not working.

Are you trying to circumvent geoblocking?

If not use 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 (both belong to Google) to narrow down the problem. If it connects without issue then the problem is definitely the DNS.

By the way, maybe it's just me, I can't see the pic in the first post.

i am trying to get around geoblocking as i am based in zim and we have a very limited netflix. I was wanting channels such as crackle and the likes. Was hoping that roku has not caught on and blocked these smart dns guys.

I've got bad news for you, most of us have given up the cat and mouse game that is trying to get the US Netflix. Roku Inc. does not care about geo-blocking, its Netflix that's enforcing it.

Kodi wont solve your problem. Companies like Netflix have all but totally blocked Geo-unblocking DNS like Unotelly, Getflix etc. We gave up, Netflix won.

Don't you have access to the SA Netflix, its far from US Netflix, but they're adding original series quite frequently and they said something about focussing more on their own original content, which they own the rights to.

Have you set up a working US Roku account using a VPN or possibly a DNS proxy service. If you don't have a US Roku account you won't be able to load the US channels such as Crackle. You will need to set up a UK Roku account to access BBC, ITV etc.

Do you have an android phone or tablet? You should be able to do much more with your Roku if you use it in conjunction with an android phone or tablet as the preloaded channels are not really very interesting. I can send you a guide if you are interested.

@Craig: There seem to be several issues here. Are you able to install the Hulu Plus channel? If not then you will need to unlink your Roku from your current account and relink it to a US based one.

You may be able to create a US Roku account using your current DNS service (DNS details must be loaded on the router). You need to do this from the www.roku.com website (Choose the Create Account option under My Account). If you already have an account that is not working then the Roku will first need to be unlinked by signing in and clicking on the Unlink button that appears next to your Roku at the bottom of the screen. Sign out and create a new Roku account either using the DNS service or a free VPN service so that Roku thinks you are in the US. You will need to supply a fake US address - there may now be an option to avoid supplying credit card details otherwise you may need to supply this also. You need to be linked to a US Roku account to install the Hulu Plus, Crackle channels etc.

I will send you a PM with the other details. Post again if you are still having problems.
