Hi

How would the roku player work in SA? I know netflix needs a VPN but what about apps like plex and the like. Also would things like the sync for your player to displays things like photos work?

I'd rather say get a WD TV Live.

And who says Netflix needs a VPN? DNS services work as well and usually much faster.

What is your preference to the WDTV Live?

I have owned 4 WDTV Lives and a WDTV Live hub. I am left with one live now that is going to be replaced with a a Roku. The others are long gone and Roku's (3 of them) in their place.

Back when they were making a name for themselves they were good, and the best you could get. Now days not so much.
The only reason I could think that it may be better is if you want to plug in an external drive.
If you intend to stream (as the OP has indicated) then the Roku is by far the best device to get.

How would I stream locally from say my laptop to roku?

Install Plex Media Server on laptop.

Make sure both on the same network and off you go.

Do a forum search for Hulu+, Netflix, Vudu HD, etc... one the Roku. There are step by step tuts around here somewhere which will get you going.
