Hi everyone,

I've inherited an environment with several managed HP switches and have also acquired an old Cisco router with matched APs.

In order to access these devices, I need a "roll-over" cable. None of our suppliers have any clue what we're talking about and I've never worked with one, so short short of Google Images, I'm in the dark here too.

Do any of you know where I might locate one, please? We're in Cape Town, but that's not overly critical.

Thank you.

Rollover cable (also known as Cisco console cable) is a type of cable that is most commonly used to connect a computer terminal to a router's console port.

Just ask for Cisco console cable, most people would have no clue what a rollover cable is.

Thanks Hunter. We can't organise the requisite paperwork for an eBay order, so it needs to be through a supplier, unfortunately. ;)

Nope, kooldude. :)

Thanks for the tips, irBosOtter & skeptic. That should greatly aid our search.

Try Westcon, Fist Distribution or Axiz Workgroup, if you only need it for a few days you can even borrow mine (i have the Serial to RJ45 one, not the USB one)

Many thanks Hunter. :)

Whereabouts in CPT are you?

The Cisco stuff is personal. I'm hoping to repurpose old equipment for home use. The switches are at a client.

I'll get one of my team on the phone to those suppliers today.

Surely you can access modern Cisco devices with that IOS thing of theirs or whatever it's called? I didn't need the console cable last time I needed to use one.

Work is in Montague Gardens.

Hi Merlin,

Easiest way to get this done is build your own or chat to your local cabling company and ask them to build one for you. If you don't have the Cisco supplied RJ45 to DB9 converter for the PC side, just build the cable with RJ45 on one end and DB9 (Female) on the other.

The pin-out is available on the link below :

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/routers/1600-series-routers/46789-port-pinout.html#db9

Remember that the PC needs a DB9 serial port or USB/Serial adapter - the console port talks good old fashioned RS232 Serial so you'll need a terminal emulator that can handle a COM port as a source (I think PuTTy can)

Good luck

Thanks everyone.

My networking knowledge spans many years, but I've just found a video tutorial that has taught me several new things. You're never too old to learn. ;) I know understand this procedure and the tech' a lot better than I did earlier today.

Hopefully we'll get all of this kit reconfigured and working, soon.

All of the devices have RJ45 ports, so we should be able to make up a RJ45-to-RJ45 cable...

Hunter: Much obliged. I'll be in touch if we don't come right. :)
