Rondebosch streaming problem

Hey All,

I like to watch BBC iPlayer using Unotelly. In Pinelands it works flawlessly all the time on either Cybersmart or Afrihost capped. It worked flawlessly on a Plugg test account, but not on uncapped so here I am on a 100GB capped account. It is enough for a lot of TV watching.

This works both on my Samsung Smart bluray and on a PC through a web browser.

However, at my father in law's place in Rondebosch with the same setup it does not work.

Ookla speed test tell me download speed is over 3Mb. BBC iPlayer speed test tells me download speed is over 3Mb/s but streaming is around 40 to 50kb/s

Can there really be shaping between the customer and the ISP?

ISP account and streaming devices are the same in Rondebosch and Pinelands. Pinelands has a 6Mb line, Rondebosch only does 4Mb - but in any case anything over 1.5Mb is OK.

DSLAM congestion is my guess.

Telkom need to add more infrastructure at the backend, as Rondebosch has lots of internet users, compared to say... Pinelands.
Rondebosch is a lot denser housing wise - more flats, so more people using internet.

I am guessing something like that, but why would it affect one protocol more than others?

Is there any hope of getting Telkom to fix this?

My mate in Mowbray suffered with bad ADSL for over a year, then they upgraded him to a 10M line and although his modem then connected at a higher rate his actual performance was worse.

At the end of the day the old man wants to watch BBC telly - is there any hope of this happening? Streaming TV is too expensive over any kind of wireless link - or am I wrong?

I have noticed similar things in Rondebosch. But, my exchange has been upgraded to the new exchanges and supports 20mb.

It is really weird that only certain services are affected. You are using the same capped account. Maybe post the line stats from the router. It might be a noise thing. Or something else.

Also, maybe post a traceroute to mybroadband.co.za and google.com from both places, on the same data package.

Aha, so if we scream loud enough we might get the line moved on to the new exchange? Could we do that and keep the same phone number?

I'll do that. I am asking here as I think approaching this issue from all side is going to make more progress than relying on the Cybersmart guy - who hopefully will be chatting to a contact inside Telkom today.
