Roof thatching

I now need to re-thatch my roof & have had a few contractors over to provide (pretty outrageous) quotes. Problem is that I don't know at the moment if there is any way of verifying that these contractors are 100% legit. They all provide references, but I don't want to depend entirely on references from people that I don't know (who might be in collusion with the contractors).

Anyone know if there is a professional thatchers body? What else would you do to try and ensure that if you were in this situation, you didn't end up with a raw deal?

Why not rather get those harvey thatch tiles, it remains grass in the inside, and tiles on the outside,
