Rooftop Wind Turbines

Was a DIY job by a friend of mine, who is a RE engineer, 4 years ago. Turbines were imported directly from Switzerland. Was a real pain in the ass to fix the breakdown.
If I recall correctly, yes. WT plugged into the aux of the main inverter.
Setup was half the PV panels and 2 WTs in one inverter and the same on the other.
Can you give us the specs and company name for the vertical wind turbine?

Might not work for all roof styles though. And no resellers in SA.

Looked into this (CT based) about a year ago as well. Honestly not worth it.

Ended up chatting with one of the main importers/resellers in SA- he’s the “expert” - and convinced me to not waste time and money.

They require a lot of maintenance, and in his words a lot stronger constant wind than what people think. “Slight breeze” wont make any difference. There’s a reason it’s never taken off domestically.

Only alternative is either more solar (cheaper by far per kW) and/or additional storage. Seems going rate these days around R25k/5kW of good lithium- and if load shed is your main reason- charge them from grid when it’s available and dont add panels.

If you are looking for that “cheap constant” solution to just tie you over for that extra 10kW or so per day in Winter.. then let us know as well ;) so far in 10+ years of solar have not found it yet…

There’s a saying it’s relatively affordable to get you 80% off grid, but that last 20% is what costs double…
Yes, all of that makes a lot of sense.

Pity because at less than R20k, if these vertical windmill jobbies work to their stated capacities and there weren't app the downsides you mention, they'd be great.

But for 20k, you can get some lovely panels and some additional battery/ies, so that's a no-brainer I suppose.

There was a medium/large size turbine on the PE beach front till a few months back

You could only really hear it when you walked past or stood right under it, as the wind picks up the ambient noise also goes up. It did make a weird swooshing noise when the wind gusted or changed direction

I dont think it actually powered anything, possibly those xmas style light installations they had there, or just connected to the grid?
Think it was a promotion/test install by Eveready / Kestrel , I was impressed how long it lasted being right next to the sea and in PE's winds

Noisiest thing in the world, especially in CPT with our wind. I had to complain to HOA because our neighbour (who works for eskom) built out a full on offgrid system and 2 wind turbines. Worst 4 months of my life. If you have even a little bit of empathy towards people dont get wind turbines.

It'll be a nice distraction from having to hear the one wife constantly moering her husband...

Those look like some serious turbines! Did he have to take them down?

They look like the props on a Cessna. Is that what they sound like??

Yeah the horizontal ones are noisy as hell, and I would never install them in built up areas, that is why I opted for the vertical turbines. But also opted for the more open design rather than the closed design. One complex I have a rental house in has specifically specced this open type. Kind of like this one.

I think even his wife thought they were too loud, and had them eventually removed. Much to the pleasure of myself and the other neighbours.

I did a quick google-fu once, and i believe they were these ones: https://www.pace-energy.co.za/products/regen-horizontal-axis-wind-turbine-600w-24v-3-blade

They were unbearable when running. Hard to actually explain the sound though, trying to find something on the internets to share .

And all of that to output only 600W peak?? Poor form.

From the application it seems City of Cape Town expects noise impact assessment (point 1) and EIA (point 4) for any wind install. That seems mighty onerous (unless I am missing some other detail here)

Has anybody investigated the feasibility of using these as a secondary power source for bad solar days, or even night time generation?

How would they work with an existing solar setup? Through the auxiliary connection on the inverter?
Stay away from Tesup. Trust me please.

Apparently my Genny is also silent with its 67db @ 5M :)

That said we been using WInd power for well over 50 years..... It aint silent :D
What does that windmill power?

I guess you'd need some pretty fancy tech to make wind power silent. Given that it is the very movement of the wind and the thing against which the wind is pushing that generates the power in the first place.

Just take a stroll around any of the yacht clubs when the wind is blowing and the noise put out by the yachts wind turbines is loud. Very loud. Ask the yachties what they use.

The longer the blades, the faster the tip speed, so that's one source of noise

On the vertical axis, the rotor is constantly moving between high pressure and low pressure, so there's vibration to deal with

Is the maintenance not the biggest issue ? The moving parts?

I see some of the highway noticeboards in CT have turbines with a small solar panel. You wont hear the sound of it over the highway so probably perfect.

Well, yes and no.

They do require regular maintenance, but then again so does my electric gate motor, and my electric garage door opener, and the rotating cowl on my chimneys, and my inverter, and my batteries, etc. Why people are suddenly scared to maintain stuff at their house is beyond me.

Also, the horizontal types need more maintenance than the vertical types, which is also why I went for the latter.
