Anybody tried this method on a Samsung device? Apprently you save this update.zip file on the SD card, and root via recovery mode. Just wanted to know if it's generally safe, even though there are overall risks to rooting in general

Is it possible to root, make changes like removing apps, then unroot?

I have rooted my device from this update.zip method as mentioned.... it is safe, as made aware by members on XDA. If you worried about warranty, there is unroot VOA same method also available....

There are many reasons to root your device. There are a number of programs on the play store that require root. Programs like Droidwall and titanium backup all require root... some launchers require root as part of the installation process...

Why would you want to unroot?
Security mostly. I'm not yet convinced about the safety of leaving a device in full-time root. All guides suggest a firewall and antivirus as first/recommended software to install once rooted.

When you have root access it means that you have super user rights. In other words the rights to change core system files and settings. Whenever an app requires root you have to explicitly give that app root permission. As long as you don't install apps willy nilly and give everything root access that asks for it. You should be fine IMO...

Unrooting is possible. Just flash a stock kernel and you're good to go... Everything is safe. Just make sure you follow the instructions and that you have the correct kernel for your phone.

I've seen this 'update.zip' file hanging about my phone but never ever used it for anything so was also wondering what its function was. I'm using cm10 on my SGS (i9000).

The contents of an update.zip file can vary and yours may very well be a backup file generated when making a change or mod or could be something else entirely.

I tried to root my Tab 2 and smashed it up solidly. It kept on restarting in a loop. I took it to Vodacom who fixed it in 24 hrs (Wow!!!) and tried again. It helps to read the instructions...
