Howzit guys,

I've got a bit of a problem. We've got a 384 DSL connection that we share between 3 houses (my folks an my two brothers) on our small landholding. Speed is fine for most stuff, except when I play Battlefield my game gets screwed up completely if somebody browses at the same time...as I'm only here over weekends it sucks bigtime and is a major frustration for me.

I've browsed around in the forums and saw a number of approaches detailing how to use multiple ISPs on one line. What I would like to know tho, is if it is possible to set up direct PPPOE connection just on my pc, and let the other pcs in the network use the "normal" way of connection through the router.

Our setup: Netgear DG632 in router mode connected to a Linksysy WRT54G router... It's a kindof weird setup that my brother did ...basically the Netgear and the Linksys have their own little private network between the Netgear's LAN port and the Linksys WAN port... and the pcs connect to the LAN port on the Linksys.

Is there a different way to connect these up that could give me direct access to the modem and use a PPPOE dialup connection? The reason I would like to do it this way is my dad and my one brother are real noobs and I don't want them to be connected directly to the net..rather have the extra layer of router protection between their pcs and the big bad net out there. But simultaneously I would like to do a PPPOE connectioon from my pc so don't have to share bandwidth with them and have them stuff up my Battlefield when they browse and skype etc etc...

Sorry for the long post... please if there is anyway I can get this fixed I would appreciate any help/suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

Well, recently changed my router to bridged but was reading on the internet that some routers allow you to be connected via PPPOE on the router(adsl modem one) and still be able to use it as a "modem" in bridged mode. If yours can do that, then you have you can connect to a different ISP whilst the other pc's will continue to use their current ISP unaffected. BUT if your router does not support this, then you will have to setup the other pc's to "dialup" like yours would be doing in bridged mode. The problem is, the 384 is still the max speed of your line, so if they are browsing on a different ISP, it will still be affecting your total speed/bandwidth for your game(someone plz correct me if im wrong but seem to understand it this way).

So, it might be worthwhile looking at upgrading your ADSL line speed before going out and getting another ISP account, then also you might find a different package may be better for u, unshaped,SAIX,IS, all depends.

This is just my 2cents included with my lovely brand spanking all day long hangover.

Ok I don't know for your specific router. Dlink 504t can't, as I have this one and have tried to do it. The telkom one with wifi can do them simaltaniously and it is enabled by default. So there is no set answer and it could be possible on your router.

The main reason the 504t can't is because it can't use the same vci and vpi setting to connect. So you will have to refer to the manual and check on there and maybe play in the router settings to see if you can get it to work. Or you could always just set up the pppoe connection and try to dial it and if it works, it works ;) Thats how I got it to work on the Telkom router!

Ziglet you are absolutely correct on the max speed thing.

aww crap, I was under the impression that withe every ISP connection you make on a line you get the full bandwidth of that line...ie each one will have it's own 384...eish..thanks for dashing my dreams :p

I've tried playing around with QOS settings as well to try and improve the situation, but it didn't seem to make a difference...

I'm not sure if a bigger line will solve the problem...doesn't browsing/downloading alway try to make the most of the available bandwidth, so it will probably still cause my game to get horrible horrible lag... I think.

The modem does have an USB connection option as well...maybe I can put it in modem mode and connect to it via USB as well as it still being connected to the Linksys WAN port...I'll have to play around with this and see.

Thanks guys...

You could run a limiting program on the other computers so that they get slower speeds. A good one to use is netlimiter, I'm sure that will help quite a lot. Try it out if you can and tell us the results.

And the nice thing about netlimiter, you can limit the speeds remotely for all the pc's running it. Thus when you start your game, limit the browsing/total speed allocated to each pc. ;)

QoS is the solution here, the catch is that you need a router with traffic policing (Cisco and Vanguard here), you then police incoming traffic as this is likely whats causing your problem.

Thus on a 512kb/s line put capping of 256kb/s on HTTP and a further 256 on EMail then cap the combined at 384kb/s. You can take this a little further an place capping only if there been traffic to games.saix.net (eg.) recently.

Problem is, this cute config cost a couple of thousand to do, so the alternative would be netlimiter (as mentioned before) or the more difficult solution a Linux box set up to run your ASDL connection using PPPoE, Linux has facilities for policing and all sorts of detailled traffic control, but it's a bitch to set up, but then again any detailled control of traffic is going to be a bitch...

D

QoS is the solution as described above. I would however try to upgrade the firmware first as there are issues with the WAG54G. I had my linksys replaced for a WAG200G unit, and is now working perfect.

the wrt54g( well my ones with alchemy software) support bandwidth throttling... and so you could throttle all the other pc's!

QOS is what u should use.. but that netgear doesnt support it!
