I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive wired router that supports PPPoE connections from the PC while still maintaining the connection from the router to the ISP. Would appreciate recommendations if anyone has.

On the same topic, does anyone know whether configuring a Netgear DG834 as "modem only" will render useless the built-in firewall?

Thanks.

Now that's useful information! Thank you. Do you perhaps know any national (or CPT based) retailers that stock Billion routers?

the link that i provided is for a site called webantics. they are on online based retailer. you can purchase it from tehm and they will courier it too you, or you could try matrix warehouse if they have a branch in cpt

Thanks. Was concerned about issues returning it to an online retailer if it doesn't do what I need, if the store was local would be easier.

Have you personally used PPPoE pass-through on this router? I did read through the online manual and does support it but was wondering how well it works.

The MikroTik routers are awesome for dialing multiple PPPoE accounts and they're fairly cheap too.

Unfortunately they don't allow PPPoE passthrough, but usually there's no need for dialing accounts from PC's if you can do manage it from the router.
If you want to allow PPPoE passthrough on the MikroTik routers, you'll have to bridge the LAN and the WAN interfaces, which reasonably easy too :)

stevenv: could you perhaps tell us how your network setup looks and what you're trying to do that you would like to have a router with PPPoE passthrough?
Would your setup look something like this:
Code:
Internet <--> Netgear DG834 <--> Router with PPPoE passthrough <--> LAN devices
                            <-------------------------------------> WiFi devices

Thanks for the post.

What I would like to accomplish is something like this:

Code:
Internet <-----> ISP 1 <-----> PPPoE on router <-----> LAN <-----> PC
                 ISP 2 <-----------------------------------------> PC

The second account is not for internet access but for accessing Telkom Cybertrade.

Now on a mikrotik you can dial both those ISP1/2 accounts, by default let everything route via ISP 1, and then set it to route only specific ranges over ISP 2. Makes for an easier life, bit less secure though for cybertrade because anyone that can get access to your network can then get access to the cybertrade network, so for that reason alone your approach is quite a bit better.

I also suggest the billion routers, they seem to give the least amount of hassles to most people.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, much appreciated and even more so that the discussion didn't veer off topic :) ordering the router now.

NETGEAR DGN2200 ADSL ROUTER

Hi,

Does anyone know whether the Netgear DGN2200 ADSL router can do simultaneous PPPOE connections? I need a device that can connect to an ISP and Telkom VPNLite simultaneously, hopefully from the Netgear or Linksys stable.

thanks

Lawrence
