Hi Guys, please forgive the newbie question, but I really need to figure out how to get accurate diagnostic stats from my router. People in these forums are always talking about: line sync, attenuation, SNR margins etc. Where do i get these stats?? I have looked for them in my router's GUI, and I can't seem to find the right options. I have a DoBroadband Mega105WR (The standard Telkom Router) and it's almost as if Telkom has configured it not to give out that information?? Or am I just missing something?

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks

Hi Guys, I managed to find these stats in the router - can someone tell me is this what I am supposed to be looking for?
My actual question is this: I have always been told that I have a 4Meg Line (for about 3 Years) and yet I have only ever maxed out at 100KB download speeds. I have never got any feasible excuse from Telkom. BTW I have been told I am around 2km from the exchange, and that I have a good quality line, and it is capable of 4Meg speeds - therefore wtf is going on? can somebody please put me out of my misery, either way :(

Modem Status

Connection Status Connected
Us Rate (Kbps) 512
Ds Rate (Kbps) 4096
US Margin 26
DS Margin 28
Trained Modulation ADSL_G.dmt
LOS Errors 0
DS Line Attenuation 11
US Line Attenuation 5
Peak Cell Rate 1207 cells per sec
CRC Rx Fast 0
CRC Tx Fast 0
CRC Rx Interleaved 0
CRC Tx Interleaved 0
Path Mode Fast Path
DSL Statistics

Near End F4 Loop Back Count 0
Near End F5 Loop Back Count 0

Hey ponder, thanks for that. I spoke to a really good Techie (rare!) at Telkom yesterday and he said the same thing. So why, oh why do I average 150Kb/s downloads and max out at 200Kb/s if I'm extremely lucky? I logged a work ticket at Telkom and they are testing the line, so waiting to see what results that will bring. BTW my line speeds have never been stable, and bounce around like a Yo-Yo?? That's why I am convinced that I am being shaped or throttled, because on a good day the speed will gradually increase, hit 200Kb/s and then bounce down to below 100Kb/s, and then gradually work its way up again - and do the same thing. What do you think?

You could take out prepaid contracts with other ISP's.... test one linked to IS and one linked to SAIX.... might help ? Otherwise like you suspect, it could be an issue on the exchange. Good luck chasing Telkom on that one :p

Just got an update from the Telkom guy that's testing my line. Apparently the Dslam sits inside an office park at the top of my road, and they have got an issue with the exchange that it needs to be upgraded or something like that. He said that it is in progress but couldn't tell me when (Typical Telkom BS). So my question is now, if I change my data to another ISP, will that affect speeds, or is it not going to make a difference?

No, if there's a problem with your exchange then a different ISP most likely won't help.

If its an upgrade that's needed at the exchange, there's not a whole lot you can do unfortunately. Apart from logging calls with Telkom, requesting this to be done asap.

Yeah, I am starting to realize this - I am actually going to get in touch with the office park IT people to see if I can find out where they are in the process. I have an idea it's been in the 'Upgrading' phase for a while now, with nobody driving it. Time to light a FIREcracker under their lazy Telkom arses. Thanks for the help BTW

I don't think they will be able to tell you anything.

Log a fault with Telkom and don't let them clear it. If they do clear just keep logging the same fault over and over and over. They don't like it when their KPI's look bad so maybe the squeaky wheel gets greased.

OK updates, I've got a technician going to the exchange today to investigate. I have his name & cell number, so I'm going to hound him forever! I also spoke to the IT manager of the Park, and managed to get the Telkom Facility Manager's name and all his numbers. These are aces up my sleeve, but I want to use them wisely. I hear what u're saying about KPI's and I never thought about it that way - good point lol, will keep it in mind :)

2sparky4u, sorry to hijack your thread but hopefully I can harvest the collective knowledge here :D

Guys, here are my stats for my Billion 7300G router. Based on this should I easily be able to sync at 4mbps speeds if i upgrade my currently 384k adsl access to 4mbps?

DSP FirmwareVersion DMT FwVer: 3.5.12.4_A_TC, HwVer:T14F7_1.0
DMT Status Up
Operational Mode ADSL G.Dmt
Upstream 128 kbps
Downstream 384 kbps
Noise Margin (Upstream) 21.0 db
Noise Margin (Downstream) 32.0 db
Attenuation (Upstream) 19.0 db
Attenuation (Downstream) 35.5 db

I realise 30dB-40dB is considered very good but i just wanted to confirm that my interpretation of my router/line stats is correct before i upgrade my line to 4mbps.

[edit]My upgrade is being processed as of 31 March. Apparently they will call me back when its done...[/edit]

ryan411, when you phone Telkom to upgrade they will check the line first.
