So my old Dlink had taken a few knocks during load shedding (wired ports dead for example), but still connected to the internet and the wireless still worked. However, it seems last night there was a power surge (tripped switches on the board when I woke up), and the old bugger finally gave up.

I should have an old backup I can use temporarily, but I know the wireless on it is **** so I am looking for a replacement.

Don't know which D-Link you had, but I have the cheap DSL-2500U linked to a TP-Link wireless router. The D-Link's were around R200 - R250 - don't know how much now, with exchange rates going up so much. Have had it for around 4 years, but don't keep it on all day & night .. only when in use. Might be why it's lasting so long.

A bonus of having this modem is being able to setup half-bridge - multiple ISP connections on dial-up, while having main ISP auto connected in the modem (my understanding of that setting, anyway).

I wouldn't hesitate getting another one, but the one disadvantage is they stopped releasing firmware updates a long time ago.

Try this one from Asus/Takealot.com It has a 3 YEAR Warranty!

Don't go too cheap. Get a TP-Link WD8968N (cheapest but best value). Fantastic router at a great price. If you are in CPT, PostmanPot can sort you out :)

dsl 2750 U is the perfect reliable everyday router.I have mine for a few years now and never had an issue ever, same with a few friends.

Only thing is if you intend streaming to multiple devices in 1080p at the same time like I do(well few people streaming at the same time hd feeds) then you should rather get a router with dual band wifi allowing both bands to be active. That's why I'm not using mine now but it still works perfect for one or two users.

Thanks guys. I've done some digging and I'm going to see if I can get another Dlink 2750U (same as my one which died). I know Telkom had them dirt cheap at one point so going to see if they still have them at a decent price.

+1 on the DLink DSL-2750 U.

If you still have a Telkom landline, then you can take a chance and see if they will replace your blown up router for free with their latest model (personally, I would ask them for the Huawei rather than the Telkom-branded Aztech or Netgear router).

Take your old router along to the Telkom shop in Canal Walk and ask them to test and see that it can no longer connect. Take a printout of your landline bill along.
