Had some heavy lightning this weekend, and after a lightning strike that made the mains in my house trip my DSL is not synching anymore since that exact moment for 2 days now.
Is it safe to say that the lightning screwed up my router and I should just go buy a new one? Or should I put myself through the hassle of telkom support?

Does the modem show any lights and is your telephone line working ??
if those two are yes ....then i would say time for a new modem but best to try your modem some where else no good buying a new one and finding the old one is ok

This is why it is recommended to purchase a cheap (yet decent) ADSL modem, like the D-Link DSL-2500U for R200 + a separate router+switch+WiFi AP.

woah there cowboy! Storm lightning and heavy rain and modem not syncing. I would first check if your line got damaged from the storm. Ive found normally after a storm and no sync is a result of a nice big branch sleeping on my line causing nightmares.

My pc`s onboard LAN also stopped working
The telephone still has a ringtone, can`t hear any noise on it (probably doesn`t matter). can still log into the router through my wireless usb dongle,
dsl light keeps blinking slowly.

Can`t test the router somewhere else because everyone I know uses 3G

find a small vent and sniff it, often you can smell it.

otherwise borrow someone elses and check your line.

and do not overlook the filter

IMO the router is damaged by the lightning, but also check your on-board nic for damage :(

Thanks all.
I`ll check/smell the situation later at home, and get a cheapy 1 port router + new network card.

I would strongly suggest that you go for that D-Link ADSL modem (DSL-2500U), and not another brand.
The D-Link one has very good SNR margins and it supports bridge + half-bridge modes.

Our area was also hit by lightning and according to Telkom techy, he had to fix 10 lines that day.

Fortunately I had my modem unplugged at the time, but when I got home from the holidays line wasn't syncing, so called Telkom and they confirmed that the DSLAM was down.

Your best bet is to phone and ask them to do a line test first. They should be able to tell whether the DSLAM is faulty on the spot and while on the phone ask them to reset your port. Other signs you can check for is for noise on the phone line. Call your ADSL number (it should have a repeating message) and listen if you hear any crackling.

Else take you modem to a friend or ask friend to bring his modem to your place and test.

same thing happened to us. was in the process of shutting down when KWAH!!!!! the lightning blew the router and computer - i'm hoping it's just the power supply 'cos it's a brand new computer. anyway i've taken it to be repaired and i'm waiting for news of what needs fixing. funny thing is, i provisionally ordered a Billion 7300NRE router from WA and was quoted R1499 including delivery. i shopped around a bit and they're available for about R900 so i've asked WA to check if the quote they gave me was correct.

sounds great Pada but is the D-Link ADSL modem (DSL-2500U) with separate router+switch+WiFi AP easy to set up? also can you suggest a router+switch+WiFi AP so i can read up on what it is/does :-)). won't it also blow up if the modem's struck by lightning? tks

Look at the TP-Link WR1043ND if you want a gigabit router/switch with 802.11n WiFi and USB 2.0.
There are cheaper options too (which doesn't include gigabit LAN/USB), eg. TP-Link WR841ND

It is still possible for the lightening to damage the other router too. Those routers that I've mentioned above can take DD-WRT firmware, which would allow you to disable and use another LAN port as a WAN port. That way if the lightening takes out your current WAN port, you just use another one instead - like buying another network card for your PC.

If you can reset the router to factory defaults, try that first.

yep tks, did that first (i was hopeful). tonight a friend will check it out just to make sure it's not working but i don't hold out much hope.
