Router lightning damage?? or something else?

Router Replacement policy?

How do i know if my router was damaged by this afternoons lightning?
When i got home today my router was unable to connect, did a whole bunch of resets and everything and still nothing.
its a dlink-2650u and im with webafrica

is there maybe some sort of checklist that i can use to determine the cause?

Does the line have a dial-tone with a normal phone? Can you access the router's web configuration Status page - if so, what does it say in there? Does the modem even physically show a sync light?
 
phone works fine
i can access the router fine
the internet/adsl light is not active tho

not sure what info u looking for from my router?
 
Either lightning, or work being done at the exchange... when they upgraded our exchange to 10mbps, my net was down for about a week (i had phone, but no dsl sync). Try get another modem to test if possible

anyone in centurion willing to test my router, or let me test theirs?
 
are you accesing it via ethernet or wireless? Normally if the routers been struck by lightening the wireless works but eithernet and adsl dont

both wireless and ethernet works

maybe the adsl port is fried? will have to see if i can get someone to check it out in the area

are there any ways to prevent this sort of thing?
 
There are lightning protection devices that help. Don't bother with the cheap stuff. There's a reason why they cheap. Even the expensive ones sometimes cant take the hit.

Best it to unplug.

Worst I've ever seen: client unplugs all power. Unplugs usb from pc, places cable next to pc. Forgets to unplug phone from pc. Lightning hit phone, hits printer. Melts usb cable plastic & take out pc as well ....again. All was replaced the week before. The area does have really bad lightning at times.

Ouch that's gotta hurt. lol. If unplugging rather than effective earthing is your measure of safety, then the idea is to unplug all earth-escape points (power) and also points where the charge surge will enter, such as the most common: phone line demarcs or TV antennas
 
do u guys maybe have some links wrt surge protectors?
i have no idea what sort of price/product i need to be looking at

Your Router is most likely toast. Collegue of mine had the sam with yesterdays storm and his is deffinatley fried.

Try Clearline, they are in Midrand and sell some of the best protection around at reasonable prices. Just google them.
 
ok it seems the router is toast

are the any brands that have a replacement policy with lightning/surges etc?
i doubt it, but its worth a try before i get a new one

If you're on a contract with Telkom, they should provide you with the router and replace it in the event of lightning damage, if I'm not mistaken, else not sure

In this area : always tell people to unplug power & phone. Oh & don't leave power plug near socket seen that also damage a PC.

Yes there are areas that are THAT bad.


Another client's house got hit on the one corner of the house roof & took out 2 TV's, fridge, microwave, 2 PC's. basially everything electrical in his house had to be preplaced & his roof needed to be repaired.

One lady client is so well known by now. She never unplugs coz she is always busy(is her excuse). So by now she walks in puts PC down & says : you know what happed, let me know what & how much. Then promptly walks out. Her number is memorised. (This is during summer) In a few weeks or a month she is back & the process gets repeated.

This is true telkom will replace a lightning damaged router BUT only in the first 12 months.... If not then you must buy new. They also only do replacement with routers that they supplied.
