I don't even know if this is possible but here goes:

If I share a line in a house with x amount of people. Two of them play guild wars and one of them plays another online game (as do I). When they play guild wars, we lag to hell and gone but when we play they are fine.

I want to upgrade the line to 512 or 1024 (is there any point to 1024?) but they don't want to pay extra for bandwidth that they don't technically use (which is fine as well).

What I want to know is this: Is there some way that I can limit/shape the bandwidth so that they get a specific amount to play around with and I and the other bloke get the rest? Currently, they use PPPOE connections to get access.

Any ideas?

download a program called Netlimiter. You can then install this onto their machines.. But it won't block them from changing it themselves... so its a tuff call..

U can then get yourself a 512K (giving 50kb per sec +- on average) Between 4 ppl..

U can then set their limits of uploads and downloads to 15kb down/15kb up (giving them 128K reletivly speaking)

But they can change that manually..

Reason for your LAGG : I think their downloading off the net at the times your playing online games.. Basically chowing on yur bandwidth at that time..

If you limit them.. they will just change it back.

You don't need any faster than 10kb per second up and down for gaming.. Trust me..

Even games that eats bandwidth like quake3, and Counter-Strike source.. eats a average of 7-8kb per second download, and another 6-8 uploading..
(1st person games eat the most)

And for RPG's u need even less.. most work on 5kb and less per second..

Well something causes us to lag horribly and the only other thing running is Guild Wars. I suppose it's possible that the updates are constantly coming down but that seems a bit unlikely.

First Netlimiter is not gonna improve the game situation, it will howeva give you an idea of how much bandwidth each game is using at the time, if u decide to cap that speed ull start lagging, the bandwidth the game uses is the bandwidth it needs. Obviously no one should be downloading when ur playing..cause downloading automatically gets priority and takes the b/w away from the games. Sounds like your probably using a 384 between 3/4 ppl, well i can say str8 up that if 2 ppl are playing at the same time and u try a 3rd its not gonna work, upgrade to 512, that will prob solve your problem..It also depends on how bandwidth instensive the games your trying to play are..

surv0 all that info and you could have just said: UPGRADE lol
[edit] wait till tomoz and your line will be upgraded to 392 should help with the speed [/edit]

Or you could set up a smoothwall / IPCOP box and implement some shaping rules, but if you maxing the line already its not going to help, unless you set the rules to give your PC all available bandwidth LOL
