I'm planning on getting ADSL from WebAfrica and there's just one thing I'm not sure about. They say on their site that you need a router and a microfilter. Does the router include the microfilter or do I need to get that from Telkom myself? Are there other routers which contains microfilters?

I have 2 phones connecting to some kind of splitter containing 2 input jacks. How does the microfilter fit into this?

I dont know of any routers that have microfilters built in. I would suggest purchasing one at any Telkom store or Incredible Connection.

Most microfilters only have one port to plug in an analogue phone. All you need to do is attach your normal line splitter into the microfilters phone port to allow for your two analogue phones.

some ADSL modem/routers come with a microfilter included (not as part of the router itself, TP-link do this), otherwise buy one from your nearest Telkom direct, I think they're about R80

Thanks. In the cloud in that diagram, my line starts out with 2 jacks. So I'll probably need 2 filters, one for the ADSL and one of the phones, and another containing only one output jack for the other phone?

No not necessarily. If u just put the Microfilter in ONE of the jacks, it splits it into 2 seperate jacks - 1 for ADSL, 1 for Phone. So unless you want to add another phone or fax to the spare jack, you do not need another microfilter.,

Yes, but I said I have 2 phones. So I'll need another filter for the 2nd phone, right?

Where the Telkom connection comes into the house there should be a grey coloured box with two connection points. The adsl modem goes directly into one of these points, adsl does not go through a filter. The pots filter plugs into the other point, this filter has two connections for two phones/fax etc. They (pots filters) cost about R35 at a telkom shop.

Just make sure you buy the correct POTS filter. There are single-jack filters for a single line, as well as 2-jack filters both for combinations of modems/phones/faxes and 2-jack filters for phones/faxes only.

OP, the basic rule is this: EVERYTHING plugged into your phone line that is not a modem must go through a filter. You can plug your modem directly into the one open port, and split the other, or you can get a 2-jack filter marked 'Phone' / 'DSL' (or similar) and split the one port whilst keeping the other phone on its own. If you do split the one between the two phones remember wall socket > filter > splitter.

I've gone through a number of DSL modems/routers and as I recall every one was supplied with at least some form of POTS filter in the box. First see what you get and then buy the remaining bits you need.

Ok, thanks for the info. Looks like I'll need a POTS filter then.

I seem to recall getting filter with all my modems as well. In my last 2 houses there has always been this grey coloured box at each telephone point (4 in present house and 2 in previous house). As the previous poster says just make sure you get the right filter. Some have a clearly marked connection for adsl and phone and normally go to single telephone line connection point. If you have double connection at the wall, the adsl modem connection goes straight into wall plug and telephones/faxes/alarms etc go through filter.

I've looked at the Billion and D-Link routers. Would they include a filter?

Have 2 Billions and they both came with filter as did the Telkom marconi. Otherwise 2 point filter at Telkom shop is about R35. This for the one that allows 2 phone, does not have an adsl passthrough so you wall plug must have 2 connection points.
