Router/Modem choice. Confused would be an understatement.

Hi again --

Now that I've selected an ISP and have a rough idea of how I'm going to lay out the telephone cables etc., I've been doing a lot of research on routers and modems ... too much probably.

I liked the idea (of Logic -- erm ... it was logical) of having a separate router and modem. But ... I can't seem to find any good set from the same manufacturer. Linksys would be ideal, but it's apparently a bit of a pain linking the WRT54G and ADSL2MUE together. Any experience with these two, or pointers to Netgear, Billion or D-Link 'sets' (in that order of preference) would be appreciated. Netgear don't seem to have a simple ADSL modem, unless I missed it. Maybe I should just go for a combo (WAG54G, for example). Just wondering if there are enough reasons to go with a separated setup? Doesn't look like many people around here have individual components actually.

My requirements:

- Router/ADSL Modem/4-port Switch, Wireless would be nice.
- SPI/NAT/DOS protection/Basics, DynDNS would be nice.
- ADSL2/2+, for forward compatability.

Ideas/Suggestions/Comments welcome and appreciated.

Thanks.

Try New SMC ADSL Modem-Routers

I am a newbie ADSL user and after some research on modems/routers,
purchased an SMC Model :SMC7904BRA EU 4 port modem/router.
It is new on the market with impressive specs.
ADSL2/2 with backward compatability ,good firewall , dyn DNS etc, etc.
Price very good: ± R700 or less Cape Town.

Check out the specs.

and just 4 port 108 Mbps wireless 4 port router. Model: SMCWBRI4T-G

I did a self install, microfilter from Telkom etc. (192 ADSL)

Modem performing perfect. 2.5 Km from Exchange.

I use a Netgear DG835G router, and am very happy with it. It has an ADSL 2+ modem, 4-port switch, 802.11g access point (54Mbps wireless), as well as a double firewall (NAT + SPI). Originally bought it because it got rave reviews from all around the world, with PCFormat and PCPlus gold and editors choice awards included, and boy I can tell you I am not sorry I bought it.

Haven't had one problem so far. The UPnP works like a dream, and it is extremely quick and easy to set up. I was originally recommended a Linksys, but after buying this I am not sorry. :)

Thanks guys.

Bob -- I think I'd prefer one of the 'big four', unless there's a nice, positive review somewhere of the SMC(s).

raVid -- I'm looking closely at the DG834G.

Tony -- are you asking me those questions?

I have a Linksys WRT54g router and a Linksys ADSL2MUE modem, and they are absolutely brilliant. Like you, I also wanted a seperate router and modem, if you decide to go with another form of BB, then you just need to change the modem, and not the router.
I did a lot of shopping around, and found www.pcmall.co.za to be the best price around, and their service is excellent.
Linksys WRT54g @R686.30 Incl. http://www.pcmall.co.za/moreinfo.asp?sku=WRT54G
Linksys ADSL2MUE @R520.64 Incl. http://www.pcmall.co.za/moreinfo.asp?sku=ADSL2MUE

Can definately recommend the combination. The modem is upgradable to ADSL2+ spec, but you wouldn't need it in your lifetime, thanks Telkom!!! :)

Bit surprised at that statement. SMC always made good network products in my opinion and they certainly are not small. I first used SMC ethernet network cards about 12 years ago and has always been happy with their stuff. That was the reason why I also bought an SMC7904WBRA and have not had a single problem so far. For example, I have never rebooted the modem since I got it. I am not trying to say one should get an SMC, but rather that one should at least consider one.

The Billion 7202G is definitely a good choice.
Regards,

Ordered myself a Billion 7202G from Digital Planet, last Friday. If you want to order from DP, remember to go to 5fm website and collect your 8% discount voucher.

With the voucher and shipping included the total comes to R818,39

Tony phone Dilshad at L&R computers N1 City (021-5951620),
she will get you any computer hardware you want.
You can negotiate a bit on pricing.

gkm --

'big four' = the four most commonly discussed routers on this forum.

I'm considering all the options. :)

Thanks everyone.

Does anyone know where I can buy Linksys and Billion hardware from in Cape Town?

TIA.
