So our trusty old Netgear DG834G has been reverting to factory settings by it own, now this router doesnt have a CMOS battery it stores the settings on the NV-RAM.

Could this chip be degrading and losing its memory?

Note: This router gets switched on at the start of the day and switched off when the business closes. Now when it did revert last night there was a thunderstorm in the area and we forgot to unplug the DSL cable, could a small amount of current travel down the cable and erase the chip?

Thanks.

Lose the thunderstorm theories...

They're just straight up shaky...having similar trouble with the router at a relatives place (also net gear). So far its "forgotten" ADSL details once and wifi details twice...just zeroes it to blank. (But not completely...just some fields).

Starting to think that both dlink and netgear have gone down the drain...

Ours completely resets as if a factory reset was performed.

So should I replace?

I want to replace because then my dad can get my router and then we can get a shiny new TP-Link W89XX.

I suppose i could backup the config file and then just restore it when it bombs out then I won't get the new router :(.

Maybe dial it from PC side?

Though I think it'll still be an issue if it forgets that 8/35 thing

If you got it from Telkom & its still <2 years then just cart it back to them. Mine bombed literally 6 days short of 2 years...got it replaced.

Its a privately bought router that was bought in 2010, apparently this router was considered the nokia 3310 of routers.

Yes it wipes Multiplexing settings.
