Router on a hub

Hi All,

I've finally managed to get my ADSL line.

It all works fine when I attach the POTS Router directly to a workstation.
I'm running a small network with a Windows 2003 server and XP workstations and I would like to connect the router directly to my hub.
Everything looks fine on the router and the Monitor tells me I am connected.
I had to change my IP Address on a workstation to access the router though.
After having configurated the router I can still not access the internet from the workstation. I've tried with the Static IP Address I use when I configured the router and also with the Dynanmic IP address setting I normaly use in my network setup.
Optimally I would like to let all workstations on the network keep their Dynamic IP Setup.
Has anybody had any luck with this kind of setup?

What you want to do will work fine. The Telkom router seems to have problems with it's DHCP server though - it seems to not always issue updated addreses when you add or remove PC's. You might want to use the Win2k DHCP server or use static IP's instead.

Have you got your workstations gateway address pointing at the router IP?

I have not set up the gateway on the workstations.
I will try to use statis IP adresses since it will simplify things.

Correct me if I'm wrong in this:

Server's gateway => Routers IP Address
Server's DNS => ISP Address

Workstation's gateway => Routers IP Address
Workstations DNS => Server's IP Address


With this setup I should be able to run and intranet with local web sites on the server and still be able to access external websites as well from workstations.

Does this make sense?

What about things like mIRC, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ etc. Do I need to do anything special with them?

Yes, workstation and server gateway should be the IP address of the router.

Your workstation DNS might be wrong. It should be your ISP's DNS address or the address of a local DNS server on your LAN if you are running a DNS server. I'm not sure about the Telkom router, but the Netgear one can act as a DNS proxy. In that case you would use the router IP as the DNS address on workstations.

If you are going to use DHCP note that the router has DHCP active by default. Check that you don't conflict with Win2k3's DHCP server in case that is active. Manual settings for the workstations will override DHCP in any case.

The Telkom router default IP is 192.168.10.200 if I remember correctly. All machines including the server should 192.168.10.x to be able to use the internet.

For mIRC and the like I'd suggest try the program out first to see if it works. If it doesn't you might have to investigate the PAT section in the router setup page to unblock ports. I have not had to do anything special to get IRC, MSN Messenger, AOL Messenger and ICQ to work.

As fas as Kazaa, emule and other P2P programs are concerned you are going to run into trouble there.[]
