Need an ADSL router where I can block certain sites from being accessible to only select PC's connected to it. Also the router needs to have the ability to connect 8 ports to it.

Which router is best for this?

if you already have a modem, i would recommend a Linksys WRT54GL. Especially given that you can load some pretty good 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT which can do that and more.

Thanks for the prompt responses :-)

Nope, no modem. Having line installed in a few weeks and need to purchase all the necessary hardware (will not be taking Telkom up on their offer of a free modem/router).

Would prefer a combination unit that can do the above.

Will have a look at the two mentioned :-)

is the telkom router/modem "free". that is tied into a contract. if not take that, use it as the modem (put in bridge if its a modem/router) and use the Linksys WRT54GL as the router.

Easy. Get a netgear DG834G / DG834GT, they have a great firewall for blocking certain sites, keywords etc and you can set certain PC's on the network to view them (IP).

then just connect that to a normal 8-port switch.

The Netgear DG834G is a good buy and will do all the above. Don't bother getting the DG834GT (Issues with Vista)

I have the DG834GT, when I had Vista (I upgraded all my computers to XP Pro) I didnt have any issues, although I didnt use any of the advanced features back then. What kind of issues you getting?

Well I only have one, my Live Messenger didn't want to connect. I've upgraded the firmware, downgraded the firmware. Reinstalled Vista, turned off the firewall on the pc and router. Still nothing.Tried a different router, no problem.

My Billion 7300M has URL blocking (which I use, no utube) and QOS (bandwidth management) I'm happy with it ;)

Can the Netgear route traffic via a local an dinternational account at the router level? meaning all computers that access the router do not have to have something like routesentry running?

The only problem with the DG834GT is it doesn't support VPN termination only VPN passthrough.

Could be an issue later on if you want to use VPN to another office.
