Hi
i do silently browse these forums from time to time.. but i just created this account quickly to post this, and was wondering if you guys could help.

ever since yesterday morning my router keeps reconnecting every 10 or so seconds.. i.e. it sort of works fine for a few seconds, then i lose connection and it takes about 10 seconds to reconnect. this process has been going on since yesterday morning.
ive tried resetting the router (via the reset button on the router and via the router config interface) also tried a different ISP account. oh, and in the logs it says 'loss of synchronization' or somthing like that.
Its a netgear DG834G and in on a 4mb line.

sorry? SNR?

i have checked noise and line attenuation, etc.
line attenuation: down - 24db, up - 6db
noise margin: down - 6db, up - 12db
and JUST before it disconnects, the downstream noise margin goes to like a gazillion.
ive had adsl for about 10months now, and this is the 1st time ive had any kind of problem. (just upgrade to 4mbps few weeks ago)
is it a faulty router? faulty cables? faulty telkom?

If you can borrow another router, see if it does the same. If not, your line sounds stuffed - log a call with Telkom.

im busy running routerstats and ive read that thread link you posted (btw thank you for your help so far ;))
from what has been recorded so far, i see that in the brief few seconds that a connection is made, the 'Rx noise margin' (which i assume is the SNR?) is between 6 and 11, and each time it connects, it syncs at different speeds, downstream is constant at 384, but upstream it syncs at 3700 - 4096 O.o
...thing is, ive been happily using my 4mb for a while now, and its been quite stable, why the sudden problems???

i think your values have been incorrectly saved where to record - but no worries. (various sync rates)

save whatever you can in the pics - i'll have a look then.

sounds to me like either you had a - severe weather storm / recent work done on an nextdoor neighbour point / faulty filter.

your line attenuation is good enough...but the SNR is weak! - so thats prolly one of the above problems.

lets check thse before you phone up telkom and ask for a callout/downsync to 2meg/3meg fixed.

after much struggling and only being able to connect for a few seconds at a time, ive managed to upload the pic and post it here :D (omg it took a while!)

with this graph the sync rate was always 4096, so ya, it must have been recorded incorrectly earlier

no storms, but it has been INSANELY hot over the past 2 or 3 days.. just an observation

In this graph the SNR is a bit higher (8-13) and where it drops to 0 thats obviously when it disconnects, i managed to do all this internet work near the end of the graph, when it managed to stay on for a few minutes at a time :)

do me a fav....

-unplug ALL the filters & analogue stuff (phones/faxes ect) - just adsl on
-if connected via an extension - use a normal rj11 length cable -2meter
-powercycle the router (turn off/on)
-make sure the router is well ventilated/cool

if possible :) , then plot a graph again .....

from this current situation - not even downgrading the linespeed 3mb/2mb is gonna help ANYTHING ... either small equipment (clientside problem) or line problem (telkom)

i've seen when routers get EXCEPTIONALLY hot - they then tend to go crazy:

-they reset themselves
-takes a LONG while to resync
-EASILY drops sync

let your router cool down a bit - if possible put a blowing fan on it + adapter ...and directly after powerup - start routerstats

i seemed to have found the source of my problem, while changing the cable, cooling it down, unplugging filters, etc. i fiddled a bit with the wall socket connection, with the phone to my ear and heard a lot of crackle when i touched it even slightly, its very old and a bit sketchy (im using a filter/spliter that came with my router, but thats not what im refering to here) so i fiddled with it some more until the crackle had completely disappeared, and there we go, problem solved, SNR now at a healthier 12-15 and no more disconnections :)

sorry for being such a noob, i should've checked this to begin with.. :D

anyway, thank you for all your help mrNutz, greatly appreciated

Thank god I didnt have to call for a telkom techie
