Hi All

I currently have a Telkom Premium Combo (Marconi) router with Telkom as my ISP. I have now purchased a prepaid 1G bundle from a separate ISP to use when my monthly bundle has been fully utilised.

What is the easiest way to set this up? Please assist with instructions in as much detail as possible. I am clueless.

Thanks

Hey there,
The best way to set up the router is to set it up in "bridge mode". This is done by accessing the router from your web browser (check your manual for it's default ip, eg: if it is 10.0.0.1, change your local IP to 10.0.0.2 and enter http://10.0.0.1 in your browser).

You must make sure that you are connected to your router via an ethernet cable (looks like a big phone jack) versus a USB connector.

Just shout if you have any more questions.

Type 10.0.0.2 in your browsers address bar. Hit enter. You should get a request for username and password. Enter admin for user name, admin for password (might be administrator).

You should see a menu on the left with Telkom at the top. On the left hand menu select WAN. Select PVC 0 in the drop down box and hit submit. Enter the following:

Pvc0
Virtual Circuit - Enabled
Bridge - Enabled (Without this, you cannot dial a PPPoE connection from a PC)
IGMP - Disabled
Encapsulation - PPPoE LLC
Username and password of default account entered.
Leave all other settings unchanged.

Click submit. Click change adapter. Select PVC 1.

Pvc1
Virtual Circuit - Enabled
Bridge - Enabled
IGMP - Disabled
Encapsulation - 1483 Bridged IP LLC
Username and password left blank
Leave all other settings unchanged.

Click submit. Go to left hand menu again. Find Save settings and reboot. Click it. Click save & reboot.

Your router is now going to connect to your default account - that whose username and password is saved in PVC 0 - and it will also be bridged so you can create a second "dial-up" PPPOE connection from windows.

If you can't make sense of the above, then you might have later firmware and a different interface. It is a confusing router to set up. Just plough through the menus till you find WAN and username / password.

By the way, I believe marconi routers, if yours is a dinosaur like mine, come in half-bridge mode by default. So you probably only need to setup the PVC 0.
To set up the 2nd account as a dial-up PPPOE, go to network connections in windows, choose set up new connection - create broadband connection using a username and password - enter the details of the 2nd account (username & password) and etc, etc.

Good luck.

nice guide Grouter

Thanks, but from memory I seem to remember that some Marconi combos have different interfaces with whatever firmware happens to be loaded. And the links I've found for premium combo user manuals end up linking to the manual for the marconi 4 port router that doesn't have wireless like the premium combo. And it seems 2c Telecoms have removed all that old stuff from their site.

This guys guide might suit the OP better: http://terry-internethelp.blogspot.com/2007/08/setup-guide-for-premium-combo-adsl.html

2 ISP set up + FNB connect

Hi Guys

Thanks for the responses. Will try it out. One query - the pc is linked to the router by way of usb. so I will have to use an ethernet link instead?

Incidentally i purchased 1 Gb voucher from fnbconnect for R69 (apparently unshaped) - so want to trial it out. Any of you gave it a go?

Thanks

On reflection, and seeing as you already have an account with telkom, the username and password for which I assume are already entered on your router, you only need to create a "dial-up" PPPOE connection from within windows to use your fnb bandwidth. This is assuming that the router is still in default factory "half-bridge" mode. You don't have to enter the router interface at all AFAIK. The usb link shouldn't be a factor. Windows will use the wan miniport and should access the router via usb no problem.

Thanks Grouter.

I actually found the manual (and cd) for the router. In playing around, I ended up deleting the wan config for the Telkom connection.
However, with the manual, it really was a snap and I ended up creating the FNB connect service (and it worked). However it doesnt help me too much in setting up the 2nd connection.
I tried the option of creating a connection from windows as you suggested (create a new network conn) and on dialing, received an error message (678 - the remote pc did not respond). Incidentally i see that under the properties for the connection it allows you to enter a service name (same as in the router) Should this be filled in?

Anyway I have tried to create a new service in the router, and it gives me the ffg options as to the type of service: RFC 1483 routed, RFC 1483 bridged, PPPoA routed, PPPoA bridged, IPoA routed, PPPoE routed. (the FNB connection was created using the latter option).
I have tried setting up using the RFC 1483 bridged option but it gives me the ffg error message "webserver:ATM channel already in use". (incidentally the menu setup in the router is completely different to what you have in yours).

What can you suggest?

thanks for all your help.

Looks like it doesn't want to do half-bridge mode.

From memory, you'd have to find the option to enable a secondary virtual circuit and set the encapsulation on that circuit to 1483 bridged IP LLC. Make sure VPI is 8 and VCI is 35. This should set the router up to act as a bridge for a PPPOE connection 'dialled' from windows.

You would leave the existing connection alone.

Hi Grouter

Seems like you are right regarding it not accepted half bridge mode.

I tried things differently now. Deleted the PPPoe connection from the router, and then set up a Bridged connection. Thereafter set up 2 broadband connections from within windows - one for each ISP.
Connected up (set up TSA as default) and both worked fine. On restarting the pc, after a minute or two, the pc started re-connected to the internet.

Not ideal I guess, but it works.

I then tried creating a new PPPOe routed connection alongside the existing bridged one, but it gave the same error as before (ATM in use already).

Thanks alot for your help. I will continue trying other options till I get it to work properly.
