Morning all,

Ok, so I am not that familiar with ADSL setups, as I have never had to do one myself. Hopefully this has not been asked before. If it has, please point me in the right direction.

We have a Cisco 800 ADSL Router, with 5 static IP addresses. So the mail/firewall (plugged into Ethernet port 1 on the router) server makes the ADSL connection (from what I can see), and grabs the first available IP address.
Now the Cisco has 4 more ethernet ports available. What is going to happen when I plug in a wireless AP into the ADSL router? Will it be able to use the connection that has been set up by the mail server?
If that is the case, can I assign internal IP to the AP and it's clients, or must I give the AP one of the available public IPs?

Thanks in advance!

Is your mail server being assigned a public IP address using PPPOE?

The router should be able to assign itself one of the spare Public IP addresses using PPPOE and function as a NAT. Alternatively you could let your wireless AP do the NAT part if it has PPPOE functionality. The Cisco router can function both as a layer 2 device and a layer 3 device. Its just a matter of where you want the connection to terminate.

Brad,

The mail server is getting a public IP on the one NIC, and a private IP on the other NIC. Our switch is connected to the NIC with the private IP assigned. Server assigns private IPs via DHCP to anything connected to the switch.

The AP is only an AP, not a wireless router.

We are having problems with the mail/firewall server, and I am trying to isolate the problem by 'bypassing' the mail server, to show them that this is actually the case.

So basically everything should still work as it is, with the exception that one of the APs must go directly into the Cisco 800 (direct internet connection) and not through the mail server
