My previous Netgear router prematurely stopped switching on so I took it in for a replacement. After setting it up with all the right settings it now won't connect at all, even trying it with two seperate routers. I took it into the shop where I bought it and they connected it up and tested it on the Telkom guest account and it worked. There's nothing wrong with the router.

After sitting on the phone about four times to Telkom support without success they eventually sent a technician out to fix it. He's just been and wasn't able to fix it. He asked me to phone the ADSL support AGAIN which I did. She asked me to manually set up a broadband connection through the new connection wizard on Windows and this works, so there's nothing wrong with my Telkom line. If I don't connect via this method I can't browse either despite being connected to the router and the internet light being on. I still have to pay the guy for the call out...

I, or any other computer should be able to wirelessly connect to the router and go online without having to do anything on the computer itself.

It seems no one can help me... but can MyBB? Or is this beyond even the capabilities of the IT guru's here?

Ensure that the VPI/VCI is set to 8/35 respectively.
Also make sure that the MTU is set to 1492.
If there is an option for enabling/disabling NAT on the router, then also make sure that it is ENABLED.

Can you log in on the router with Telnet?

Could be a DNS problem or with windows internet settings.

Can you connect to ip addresses? Try going to http://41.203.21.137/ in your browser. You should get a 'It works!' web page.

All those settings are right. Obviously the router must be functioning as a modem in some capacity or I wouldn't be able to connect at all even with the windows dial up thing.

Telnet?

so:
1. the router(s) work as you tested them at a shop, as well as when you did a manual broadband connection right?
2. your line works as you say when you set up the manual connection it worked.

so does everything still work when you do the manual connecting? browsing, wireless, downloading, etc.

and what is the router model number you using?

I can browse and download etc, but if I disconnect the ethernet I can't, even though I'm connected wirelessly to the router. If I disconnect the manual Telkom 'dial up/whatever' I can't at all, despite being connected to the router and the internet light on. It's one of the Netgear DGN ones.

any chance of showing us a screenie of your BASIC SETTINGS page?

k so obviously something is up with the router not establishing a connection/not keeping connection, unless you do the manual connecting.

when you have the ethernet disconnected and you are on wireless, can you connect to the router via the 192.168.X.X (or whatever yours is on)?

Why is your Login details like onlinexxxxxx.telkomsa.net and not onelinxxxxx@telkomsa.net ?
Also disable the "Connect automatically, as Required" setting.

Update: at the last screenshot, your router shows that it is indeed connected to the Telkom account, so your login details are correct.
My guess is that your problem is just a DNS issue.

See if you can 'ping 8.8.8.8 -t', and then see if you can 'ping google-public-dns-a.google.com -t'

In the first screenshot NAT is on 'Disable Firewall'. Try to put it on 'Enable'.

You just solved what Computer Mania, Telkom technicians and a number of other IT professionals overlooked and could not solve. You, my friend, are an hero :D

Thanks a million

hey...

I did request the screenies you know

:p

j/k

and here I thought not mentioning it, after seeing those screenies, wouldn't make a difference. :(

but yeah as Pada said, he did in his initial post mention that NAT should be ENABLED so nice on him.

good job too Rudi.

see, 3 of us make a good team even if only Pada was enough :D

Well done one fixing the issue Skitter.

Any network technician who's worth his salt should be able to diagnose a NAT problem... ;)

and any guy who has no idea what you are talking about, will trust that what you say is good :p
