Hi

I recently replaced my old Telkom Netgear 834 router with a Netgear DG2200. The router worked fine for a week, but then I started noticing random disconnects from Xbox Live. I initially thought it was my ADSL that was acting up, but it seems to be the wireless connection. Every couple of minutes (sometimes longer) I loose the wireless connection on all my devices thats connected to the router (mobile, Xbox, laptop etc.). The old Netgear 834 works fine.

I googled and changed all the recommended settings (different channels, security settings etc.). The router is not near a microwave oven, large metal objects, cordless phones etc. There aren't any firmware updates available - though I can't see why it would work for a week and then stop working, so it can't be firmware related...

It seems the only other explanation is the router is stuffed. Any other suggestions? I want to take the router back to IC, but I don't want any long discussions or debates with them, I just want the thing replaced... (I threw away my proof of payment, so hopefully they can find it on their system :( )

Cheers

Hi There,
Sounds strange. My DGN2200 has worked tirelessly from day one. How do you know it is the wireless that is disconnecting?
I know you can see connected devices so make sure that when it is not communicating it is not disconnected wirelessly. If the wireless is not disconnecting then the ADSL has to be the issue. then check your filters as Franna sugests.

Hi

I've tried a hard reset.

I don't believe it's the ADSL connection. I have tried to isolate whether it's ADSL or WIFI and I found the following:

1) whenever I loose my Xbox Live connection - I completely loose the wifi connection on my phone.
2) When I stream movies from my laptop wirelessly to the XBOX the movie stops after a while an I loose connection to the media server - This should have nothing to do with ADSL

One of my clients had exactly the same issue. Only difference was that they had a PS3, instead of an Xbox. When the wireless on the PS3 stopped working from time to time, the entire wireless network went down. The cabled connections were still working. They had the latest firmware on the Netgear, and we even went as far as confirming that there's no MAC address clash on the network.

We swopped out the Netgear, and all was working again.

Thanks for the response. I took mine back to IC. They are sending it away for repairs... I'm two weeks to late for a swop out...

I've experienced similar problems with Netgear Routers (DGN2000 and N150), my devices connected by cable are unaffected but the devices on wireless disconnect. With my DGN2000 it was fairly random (sometimes it would disconnect every few minutes and at other times it would work for weeks). A friend told me that sometimes it's because the routers overheat. I flipped the DGN from horizontal to vertical and the number if disconnection incidents reduced dramatically. With the N150 I have no bracket or stand so it has to stay horizontal (I suppose I could do a spoeg en plak make a plan stand). Instead I forced it to stay on b/g which lowered the speeds but lightened the load on the router and the disconnects stopped. The gist is, try keeping your router cooler.
