Router with ADSL modem built in.

Hey guys,

Im in a bit of a pickle, got myself a belkin wireless router with built in ADSL modem , hoping to use my I-Burst UTD as it uses pppoe. Im not able to connect. Is it possible to use an ADSL modem ?
In the setup page hard coded in the router, i chose pppoe and entered my username and password.
Nada, nothing, nix . forkall.
What about encapsulation, VPI/VCI, etc...

Any help would be appriciated, greatly.

Already searched the forum and belkin, google, iburst.co.au , But nothing on using router with a pppoe client to connect to iburst, hence the cry for assistance in the iburst section.

Which model? In any event, the answer is probably not. The WAN side of the router firewall is almost certainly hard wired to the ADSL modem, so all the pppoe details you are entering are being sent to the ADSL modem, which isn't connected to anything and can't be connected to the iBurst UTD.

You need a router that has an ethernet WAN port to connect to the UTD. These are normally advertised as ADSL/Cable or gateway routers.

Thanks for the advice. The unit is a :

BELKIN - 54MBPS ADSL MODEM WITH BUILT-IN 11g WIRELESS ROUTER

Model - BELKIN F5D7630UK4A

It has a ADSL/WAN port, which i have connected to the rj45 port on the UTD.
But as you say, if its sending the pppoe credentials to the built in ADSL modem, its nada gonna work.

hmmm. ...

I just had a quick look at the manual on the web. That is an RJ11 ADSL port so connecting it to the UTD will do you no good. If you want to stick with Belkin you are looking at the F5D7230uk4 rather than the F5D7630uk4.
 
Just had a look on the actual WAN port of the router, it does say RJ45. a RJ11 is a small telephone type connection, isnt it ?

They are very similar connectors but the RJ45 has more contacts and is wider. An RJ11 will fit into an RJ45 port but not the other way round.

If I look at http://web.belkin.com/support/download/files/F5D7630_Manualx.pdf on page 5 I see a dedicated ADSL port, which makes sense given that this device is marketed as an ADSL modem with built-in router. I notice the wording is ambiguous on the whether this port is an RJ11 or an RJ45. Page 3 is clear that it is talking about an "RJ11 Phone Line Cord (for connecting the Router to the ADSL line)". Page 5 is clear that the "LAN ports are RJ45" but page 6 says nothing about the ADSL port being an RJ11.

I wonder if Belkin just used a set of five RJ45s instead of four RJ45s and an RJ11. It might be cheaper from a board fabrication point of view if they are using a common board for various models.

See if they won't swap it for a Linksys WRT45g wireless access point and router (not the adsl router and access point). That works perfectly. You can not connect an ADSL modem to your UTD as far a I know.
 
coza - I have a belkin 54g router - could not get it to work with iBurst - but my model did not include the DSL modem thingy...
 
Maybe too late?

I am running a Gigabyte BR404W wireless Broadband router, and it works perfectly with the iBurst UTD. The PPPoE is set up automatically by the router. I also used this on our Cable network in the estate (fixed ip setup and not PPPoE).

I reckon the important think to look for when buying, is for a BROADBAND router, and not fixed to ADSL.

me too , i got a GIGABYTE GN-B49G 108Mbps Wireless router , works 100% with the UTD and a SMC Barricade 54Mbps SMC2804WBR wireless router , also works 100% with UTD :-) ... selling the SMC if anyone interested :-)
