Hi all

I want to set up my Sentech modem on PPPoE with a router.

What do I need? I guess I need the Ethernet pigtail for the modem - can I get that from NoWire?

As for routers - where can I get one from? I would prefer wired, rather than wireless.

Anything else I need to know?

claymore ... you really need to search the forum... this has been debated to death!
i. Buy a IPW Ethernet cable (Available from NoWire)
ii. D-Link DI-604 Router (Cheap, reliable and with built in Firewall)
Search the forum on how best to set it up.

Alternatively (don't you just love that there is always an alternative) if you have an old box hidden away somewhere, you can install Smoothwall and 2x ethernet cards to act as firewall (the two ethernet cards - one for Sentech connection, other to switch). I use a P2-233 with 32megs memory and a 1Gig HD, works fine. You can use your current switch / hub then - I assume that is how you and Melancthe share the connection currently?

Smoothwall is easy to set up, use and administer, there is a writeup floating around here on how to set it up - it sounded a lot more complicated than it actually was.

Otherwise you can just use Melancthe's machine and install Smoothwall on it (oh it does overwrite everything, but it isn't as if she really _needs_ her own machine, is it?)... *me runs and hides*

passif... for purposes of clarity... prey do tell us what type of vehicle do you drive?
I have this mental picture of a 1970's VW, welded together with a 1880's Ford and
with something else in between :)

Some of us simply go out and buy the dam thing..... a complete car!

Cool. Still couldn't find a place to get the D-Link from...checked their web page, found that Pinnacle Micro distributes them. Luckily, I'm registered with Pinnacle.

ROFL!!!!!!!

Actually, it wouldn't be so funny if it wasn't true. Truth be told, I don't even drive a car (my better half prances around in a Volvo S40), but I have a 14-year old motorcycle held together by duct tape, spit and prayers...

Is the DI-704P a suitable replacement for the DI-604? Pinnacle are out of stock on the 604. It seems to me like the only difference is that the 704P has an additional shared printer port.

The DI-604 is still the main (non wireless) broadband router product....
and has not been replaced by the DI-704P.
To my knowledge, the DI-704P is a router with "print server" capabilities.

So pretty much the same, except with a printer port?
