So I got a new router, A Belkin (don’t quite know the model number yet), on the stupid Netgear router the noise margin was ridiculous, hovering at about 7 db, now it’s @ 14 db and its stable, best of all I can run 4 Meg easily.

Considering I was running at 3 Meg, and the stablity was terrible, this proves that the router does make a difference.

On an unrelated note, I phoned Telkom to ask them to up me back to 4 Meg, I tried to get them to up me to 10 Meg as an added bonus, the answer was no immediately, guess that speed checking tool is of no use after all.

I am about that far from the exchange.. do me a fav. and get me a model number so I can buy that router to test your theory ;-)

Netgear DG834v5 by any chance?

That is correct, can't be happier now with this new router.

Well, its a Belkin Enhanced Wireless Modem Router Model: F6D4630-4 v2
bought it a Game for R600 or was it R700 (in that range)

Indeed,Netgear went for cheaper components when they moved from v4 to v5 unfortunately. The Pro v5 model is uncrushable but costs double 0.o

I'm actually quite impressed with the Asus DSL-N10's,exceptionally cheap and rocksolid connection stats on bad lines

The previous models all used some iteration of either an AR7 or Broadcom,till v5,at which point the split it into the GT (v5 pro originaly) and the Gv5
GT is using a Broadcom BCM6348 as opposed to that tripe Connexant CX94610 in the v5

Sorry to derail but, is the billion 400G a good router? I have it new from the promotion.

I am also using this router, its pretty stable although my line quality is very good to start with. Wireless on this thing is useless though, I will definitely be upgrading when I have some cash to spend on a new one.

I got that one at dion wired but when I got home I realised it was a customer returned unit, it was sealed and shelved instead if being returned so they gave me a free upgrade to its 300mb brother.

Only got 1mb and where I live I used to get a solid 4mb on some vox peice of ****. On 1mb now cuz I really can't justify 4mb when I'm at work all day?

I had a Netgear DG834GUv5, which was synchronizing at 6Mbps (40dB line attenuation), but the SNR margins were quite poor. So I gradually downgraded to 4Mbps, and then even to 2Mbps. Still the SNR margins fluctuated too much (anything from 13 to 3dB), like it reached 3dB @ 2Mbps. It was quite wierd that the ADSL did not reset at all, but I had no working Internet connection either.

So then I decided to plug in my D-Link DSL-2500U, and now I have a SNR margin of 19dB, and my Internet is pretty solid.

How far are you from the exchange?

I dont know much at all about SNR etc ... but this is what mine is:

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin (dB): 3.3 6.0
Attenuation (dB): 42.0 24.5

Attainable Rate (Kbps): 7200 1020
Rate (Kbps): 6944 896

How is that? good or bad ?

@jackshiels:
I'm really not sure. The line attenuation stayed on 40dB when I plugged in my DSL-2500U. When using ADSL2+, the line attenuation is slightly higher - both on the Netgear & D-Link modems.
Do you reckon I should contact Telkom and ask them for the distance to the DSLAM, and then see if my line attenuation value correlates?

@IRG:
3.3dB SNR margin is TERRIBLE.

You should downgrade to either 5 or 4Mbps, so that you have SNR margins in the region of 10-12dB.

the regular v5 is known for terrible syncing worldwide :P

Actually we should speak of the ADSL modem, and not the router ... if you want to be technically correct ;)
