Johannesburg - A man believed to be a hijacker has been arrested in possession of military grade assault rifles during a routine patrol by Johannesburg Metro Police in Midrand.

The metro police chief Wayne Minnaar said in a statement on Saturday that the man was driving a silver Mercedes Benz and failed to stop during the patrol.

"The suspect had three R5 automatic rifles in the boot as well as five bullet-proof vests belonging to the South African National Defense Force, police, correctional services and private security companies."

Minnaar said they also found a police jersey in the boot.

He added that the suspect had allegedly hijacked the car in Kempton Park last month.

He is due to appear in the Midrand Magistrate's Court next week on charges of hijacking, and possession of stolen property, illegal firearms and ammunition.
