I have a problem accessing cctv dvr from net.
Currently have wireless internet setup but am not assigned a public ip.
Could this be problem?
I have setup port forwarding in air os setup as well as dns. Port not open when checked & ip dns redirects to goes to service provider.

Use dynamic dns and this should resolve your issues. Www.no-ip.org should anset your questions

No it won't mean anything if he doesn't have a public IP because it will simply assign the public IP he is NATted behind by his ISP to his account and it will never reach him.

@IceQB you'll need to get your ISP to forward the port for you...and I'm guessing it's one of those fly by night wireless companies who only barely manage to service their customers with duct tape solutions so don't hold your breath.

Well, if he does not get a public IP (dynamic or static) dynamic dns service will not help...
He's probably on one of the wireless ISP's who gives their customers IP's in a private range

(I see Sauron beat me to it...)

Thanks thought as much. My buddy has no choice as there are no telkom lines yet. But ive been looking around for a better wireless provider for him.

If he is happy with the pricing/service, then setup vpn, this will build a tunnel accros the networks, and give him a public ip.

How would one go about setting this up?

Good Afternoon,

I think there are a few different ways to go about it.
1) You can setup a virtual Linux server (VPS) - (under $5 a month) - I pay $3.5, and then you can use the free version of OpenVPN to setup a tunnel from that machine (residing in JHB) and you use the static address of the VM as the beginning of the tunnel to your friends house.
2) there are numerous software VPN services out there that you install client, and start it, and you pay per month, some are even for free, but not so sure if they would provide free fixed IP, but then you use DynDNS plus VPN.

https://openvpn.net/

I'm just thinking off something, If you are on the pc behind everything, and you goole "what is my ip" then you should get a public ip,
Then try to use DynDns to get the ip, you can PM me, I have a VIP account, so then we can do some tests, and maybe the VPN thing isn't needed.

Kind Regards,

Thanks, thought you meant some other sort of vpn besides OpenVPN.
I have a few VPS's with OpenVPN installed already.
Ill try to create a tunnel using one of my vps's & check.

You do get an IP, but my guess is this IP is assigned to everyone on that tower.
When using this IP with No-IP or DynDNS it opens to the WISP login page or something. Cant recall exactly page name.

Yes, i also gave the othe vpn's in the second link! That you rent as service.

Don't need them, have a few vps's I have vpn installed already.
Just didnt think using a vpn would work in this instance.
Will give it a try!

I have some different suggestions for you.
I think you just need a vpn which you can choose from www.vpnranks.com/5-best-vpn-software.
When you get your vpn then go to its setting and click on auto configuration.
Up to my knowledge this is the simplest solution which you can do.

Correct. Contact your provider about the issue, or as mentioned a VPN.
