Can anyone please give me some advice on recovering data from a dropped external drive?

The user could access some of the photos but not anymore.

If it has data on it from the Mars Rover, I'd say that's kinda crucial. take it to a pro.

You don't provide much information. Brand/model, symptoms exhibited, inside enclosure or connected to MB via SATA etc etc etc
