There has been a massive train accident in Pretoria involving a luxury passenger train.
At least 15 people have been seriously injured and there are reports of deaths.
It is believed the Rovos rail train derailed shortly after leaving Bosman Station in the capital.
Paramedics are trying to free trapped passengers.
Netcare 911’s Chris Botha said at least 55 people were on board at the time of the accident.
“At the moment I’m standing at the wreckage. There’s absolute carnage on the scene. The Pride of Africa train has derailed. Some of the coaches are lying on top of each other, “ said one bystander.
“Paramedics, firemen from all services, Metrorail, everybody is busy at the moment combing through the wreckage,” he added.
At least nine carriages may have been involved.
Tshwane Emergency Service’s Johan Pieterse said, “There’s still a few patients still trapped inside the coaches so the fire brigade personnel are attending to all those trapped and it’s a search and rescue at the moment.”
My husband were at the scene 5 min after the crash, we are currently refurbishing the Blue train at the station ... This is a terrible accident, he took photos before anyone else was on the scene, we had the camera for the final decor pic's to be taken of the Blue train, handy i woiuld say, for such an event on the same day...The speculations is as follows...the train stop at centurion station to switch locomotives, they didn't "attached" it properly...the brakes as well...slowly the couches moved away....the roete from centurion is downhill towards pretoria /bosman street station, the trains normal maximum speed is between 40/50km ph. The train travelled between 120/140km..people driving on the highway saw the train speeding past them.....i will put pic's on this wall, when my husband arrives home toninght..![]()
Safety inspectors said it appeared the accident happened as the train was changing from an electrical locomotive to the Rovos Rail's emblematic steam engine.
"The rest of the train went into motion and ran away before the steam locomotive could be coupled, resulting in a derailment outside the Blue Train depot in Pretoria," the regulator said
