Hi.

I have searched the internet over ... and keep getting huge answers.
Please could someone tell me the whole point to an RSS feed, is it just for getting the latest news updates?

Also, please can someone tell me how to actually use an RSS feed ... I've tried so many times ... but you know how sometimes the simplest thing tricks you so badly :P ...

Thanks.

RSS = really simple syndication

A way of syndicating a websites content to users who use RSS readers. IE7 has this built into it as well as Firefox although there are dedicated RSS readers which have additional functionality.

I think what he is asking is what is the advantage of a RSS reader over say, simply visiting the site with a web browser?

* awaiting the awnser

Ya ... basically that ... is it just basically a news feed?

check this
http://www.wizard-creek.com/rss/tutorial/rss-what-is-it-good-for.htm

i use it to check the newest downloads from neowin , autopatcher and the ebook portal

these sites give you live bookmarks witch is a RSS feed, if something changes on the site the live bookmark changes, witch consists of new items in your live bookmarks ( firefox ) or favourites ( ie ) called live feeds

Yes and no, an RSS feed is a summary mostly of the updated content on a website, so if you see a feed on the list which interests you, you have to visit the site in order to see it completely.

I don't use RSS and I don't think I will either, I rather visit the site itself ;)

I sometimes use it. For instance, my google sidebar updates me of the new threads in MyADSL.

Ok if you're using only 1 rss feed then it really is pointless but if u have say 10 rss feeds from your fave websites then you'll have a view of whats new on each website in terms of interesting articles etc and you don't have to visit all 10 websites to see if anything has changed.

It's a way of staying more uptodate with content on websites.

There are also RSS aggregators with custom RSS feeds from thousands of websites. So they collect 50,000 rss feeds every few minutes from various sites and then u can instruct the rss feed to show you ANY feed entries that relate to a topic like Telkom or rugby.

So in one place you can see any new stuff on rugby or telkom or whatever the topic is - that way you can find articles on websites that you've never visited but have content matter on it.
