Rubber bullets fired at WSU students
2013-08-28 15:59

Johannesburg - Police fired rubber bullets to disperse protesting students at the Walter Sisulu University of Technology campus in Butterworth on Wednesday, the university said.

Spokesperson Angela Church said about 12 students were injured during the protest.

"The students clashed with the police after they were told to vacate the university by Wednesday," said Church.

University management then gave students an extension until Friday to vacate the university.

Outrage followed the university's announcement on Tuesday that it was closing due to weeks of labour strife.

Church said about 10 students were also arrested for public violence but Butterworth police could not confirm this on Wednesday.

United Democratic Movement leader Bantu Holomisa said in a statement the strike by university staff had prompted him to write a letter to President Jacob Zuma.

"We have asked the president's office to set up a task team to look into the matter, because the university management and education department have failed to resolve the problem," said Holomisa.
