A new rugged camera has been launched. The Ricoh G600

Specs look good.

I have always liked the idea of hardware that can take life's moments without complaint. Your thoughts on this model? Any others to consider?

I know this one isn't labelled as 'rugged' but I sure found it to be, and it's far cheaper, and most likely delivers far better pictures.
We used one of these Canon Ixus 850 IS for a work camera in an industrial environment, and it's still working well after two years.

Here's the latest model in this range the Canon Ixus 950 IS

Damn nice cam, just the kinda thing I need in my world - but ai-yi-yi that price! Can anyone recall a muk-n-druk camera (ok, admittedly not ruggedised) that has a hotshoe for an external flash?

Can anyone else recall a muk-n-druk camera (ok, admittedly not ruggedised) that has a hotshoe for an external flash?
Um . . . maybe? :o

Quite a few. Do a search on dpreview with the feature feature.

It seems to be downright now. Try again later.:(

The Canon Powershot G9 is a beautiful piece of kit

It's not ruggedised as such - you can get aftermarket cases for most cameras though, similar to the silicone cell-phone pouches that are so popular - but they are pretty tough. They are not cheap by any stretch of the imagination though, which is not surprising given you're buying a mik-en-druk that's as capable as many DSLR's, but with a fixed lens.
Most of the compact cameras which can accomodate a hotshoe flash that I can think of fall into the same category as this Canon though, being aimed more at the serious enthusiast / semi-pro who wants a pocket friendly camera for those times you can't have your SLR hanging around your neck.

My very first (film) mik-en-druk didn't have a hotshoe. Or a flash. :)

bwana: mik = aim, druk = press/squeeze
