Rules for power banks on planes in SA explained

South Africans about to board domestic flights are subject to strict rules regarding the electronic devices they can take aboard aircraft, with the risk of confiscation or added delays.

Power banks are regulated by airlines and are only allowed in carry-on luggage under a certain wattage, as they pose a fire hazard, especially if not under supervision.

How many people actually check the Wh-rating of their powerbanks and how many airline check-in have any idea of this?

The 100 Wh limit also applies to the internal batteries in devices. This is why most laptop batteries stop short of this. Laptops within this limit can however normally be placed in checked luggage if they are powered off (although this may not be a good idea for other reasons).

This is Air Busan Flight 391 last year after a battery bank caught fire in an overhead compartment, fortunately while it was still on the ground. This is one reason why there are new international regulations against these from being placed in the overhead compartments.

On a flight from Windhoek back to Johannesburg, Airlink, on Monday a guy infront of me had a JBL portable Bluetooth Speaker as hand luggage. At check-in he was told it's not allowed! Supervisor was called and they said the same. They spoke for a while, people in the check-in queue could be heard making comments against the ground staff. Seems like they were allowed to take it in the end.



Checked on the Airlink webpage while in the queue, Bluetooth speakers are allowed as carry on luggage.



Same airport that tried to take my Namibia coins at security check the last time I visited, told me it's illegal to take them out of the county. My reply was " Next time I'll leave them with my mother" they never replied.
