rumor has it....

Most tourists and foreigners I speak to are often almost completely clueless about the crime and other major risks.

They have been thoroughly duped by various media propaganda campaigns.
Now before Kilo and co come and say duh "what about the internet". I can't help it if they are ignorant. Ask them why they don't look it up. Maybe researching crime, poverty, pollution etc. doesn't rank highly when searching for a holiday destination.

Exactly. We are getting it. Those who are against it can join Baas in Oz with all the sheep.

7.3 million people visited SA in 2005, according to StatsSA - and that's even without an attraction like the WC, I don't think there's anything to worry about on that score

Me neither. More than a million tourists hit Cape Town alone every year. They do fine, and keep comingback for more. With all the development going on at the moment, I am sure that this year will see record numbers. Just take a look at the Waterfront for an example...

I have a feeling that this year will tell all. If there is any drop (or lack of growth) in international tourist numbers then this government should realise the gravy train in on track to nowhere.

I hope you are right.

Did I just say that!

Ah, alanf - you have a great sense of humour dude (and I apologise for my general belligerence) - but your way provides no solutions at all (and not once have you posted anything towards a solution - admittedly, from our point of view, of which there is none.)

But - your view of the world of barriers is no solution - therefore I will remain where I am most happy until forced by exterior forces to make change. Your rightwing propaganda (with no solutions) is not the way.

And - I have lived overseas - for many years - and I know the reality - of everyday thinking of SA - witness IamCanadian - a sad, lost south african if ever there was one.

What the hell is wrong with you. This is not the Kilo I know. Get him some medical attention.

Jokes aside.

Humour gets you through the day. If I may give some advice. Having been through a bad time personally it helps a great deal. You must see people's faces when your joking and laughing when you should be distraught. Find humour in even the smallest thing and it helps no matter how nutty you might seem to others.

Naturally we don't see each others solutions as being correct. For me, while yours are fine on paper they don't work in the real world. I get they feeling of being stuck in circle. Never quite reaching the goal. We keep waiting for your solutions to work because on paper they sound fine.

Good to see some sympathetic words for IAMCANADIAN. I don't think he is that bad and does what he does because he is frustrated by S.A same as most of us.

Now I've got that gooey bit over with. I still think you are looney and will not hesitate to abuse you because you are well, "Kilo" and that makes you an exception to the rule.

My Dearest Kilo,

A huge tear falls from my eyes, I write this letter to you my best friend in all the world. I am so lonely and lost. My life in Canada has gone from bad to worse in the many years since we parted our ways on that sunny day at Jan Smuts Airport, (I mean Oliver Tambo Airport).

You were so right my friend. I NEVER should have left South Africa. You warned me but I wouldn't listen to you. It was a terrible mistake and one that I will regret making until the day that I die. These Canadians are so horrible to me. They won't give me a job inspite of there being only 3% unemployment in Calgary. And here I am trying to support my family and my precious little Bobo. Thank heavens for the welfare state we have. At least I can go to the doctor without having to show him my credit card. Small mercies.

You remember Bobo, my little african monkey. Sadly Bobo is on his last legs and can't seem to get adjusted to the permanent minus 50 degree weather here. Remember how he used to swing freely from the lo-quat tree in my back yard in Jozi. He misses those long hot summer days. Swinging from stunted pine trees is not his idea of fun and pine cones are exactly that edible. Not to mentioned being chased by enormous polar bears. Poor little guy.

Did I tell you that I feel so lost and sad right now? I so wish I could move back to South Africa. I am a little short of cash because of my employment situation. Could you send me a plane ticket? I would love to move back there and perhaps bask in the glow of Zuma. I hear he is quite the ladies man and that he will be our next leader. Has he found his machine gun yet? Maybe I can help him find it when I get there.

Anyway, I have to go and get in the snowplough to clear my driveway so that I can get out to continue my fruitless search for a job.

Please pray for me.

Your Saddest and Loneliest friend,

IamCanadian.

Very funny, IamCanadian!

I think the people on the forum bashes you for leaving the country, but let's see how fast they want to pack their bags & leave the country when their wives get raped in front of them and the culprits walk free, due to files that 'went missing', or a family member or girlfriend gets shot in the head for a cellphone (happened last weekend in Joburg) and the police doesn't give a hoot about it. That would make me want to leave.

This is my country of birth, but it would seem this country is becoming more & more like an animal farm - all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others....
