All Over...
I have heard that apparently you can bypass telkom and use proxies on the net without interfering with the 3GIG cap.....is this so??

Only if it's legal.

Also, it's very much restricted to what protocols you can use.
The proxy obviously has to be hosted in the country, otherwise it's totally pointless.

I've setup my own CGI proxy on my web host which I use for limited overseas surfing when my cap has reached it's limit. It's my proxy that control and therefore 100% legal. I'm paying for my hosting and so long as I abide by my hosts rules, I can use that hosting how I wish.

The script I'm using is CGIProxy :- http://www.jmarshall.com/tools/cgiproxy/

You obviously need a webhost that supports CGI to run that above script.

You cannot do p2p or international gaming through a CGI proxy.
You also cannot access many secure sites - for instance, I can't get to updates.mozilla.org or gmail.google.com via the proxy I've configured.
You can however download via HTTP or FTP.

Scanning for open proxies and using them without permission is illegal.

Thanks for the info...I personaly thought it was impossable because when you're on the net, you HAVE to go through your ISP anyhow before you can use another proxy....thereby there is no way of "gippowing" the 3 gig cap....not so?

If you have access to a locally hosted proxy you are basically downloading via a local server.

The dictionary definition of proxy is "The authority to act for another." and that is essentially what a proxy server does.

If you, DEF, connect to a local server ABC and request www.google.com, server ABC fetches the data and relays it to you.

Sorry matt, last question if i may...When you have a Telkom line ( ADSL ), obviosly you can connect to ANY proxy, INSTEAD of your own ISP if you got a username and password ( for another peoxy that is )....eh? tia

Yeah, some proxy servers have password user name configs.

Sometimes you don't even have the option of a username or password - in this case, the sysadmin has configured a proxy that only a specified subnet have access to. Anyone else is denied.

For instancer cache.datapro.co.za
Anyone who gets internet access from datapro will be allowed to use thier proxy service.

Don't get confused with the setup I have, which is a cgi proxy - that's just like those anonymous proxies you see on the net. In fact, many of them use the cgiproxy app link I indicated above.
That type of proxy is accessed via your browser as opposed to configuring it in your browser or another application.

There are many different types of proxy servers, or rather, different types of configuration. As far as I know, you can setup a proxy to process any data from any port - for instance, it's entirely possible to setup a bittorrent proxy server.

I actually don't know all that much about them - possibly someone with far better knowledge than I have can give you a better run down, but google is always your friend ! :D

Do a search for "proxy server" on google - there's a lot of info there.

haha - yeah right ! :D
I can see it now, my webhost sending me a bill for an extra 100gig used above and beyond my 3.5gig !

If I could, I would, but I can't, so I won't :p

And I should, but I shan't...

Sorreee - just couldn't resist! :p

This is quite interesting. How much do hosting providers charge for a gig? If they're cheaper than Melkhom then you might as well get a hosting account and just set it up as a proxy and do your downloading through that. AKAIK with some hosting providers you can get a fixed monthly amount and get to share a 4MB or so pipe without any bandwidth limitations. Will cost a couple of thousand though. I think the question is, how secure can you make your proxy?

bb_matt does cgiproxy have authentication built into it? If not, what did you say your server's ip is again? Jus kidding ;-)

fergus - got it setup with auth :D

I would say it's probably not worth it unless your using the web hosting for another primary activity. In my case, I host my clients websites and have 3.5gig to play with.

In the past, the most I've used in a month is 1gig

The limitations are enough to make it just a temporary solution while your capped.

CGIProxy is supposed to allow connectivity to secure sites, but I'll be damned if I can get it to work, so anything on port 443 is tricky.

Downloads are dependent on your web hosts speed and your own, in my case, international downloads max out at top speed - on DSL384 I get 40kb per second.

You also have to abide by the rules of your web host.

It's also a bit painful, I've had to setup a whole bunch of extra bookmarks to prevent having to type them into the form field all the time.

Still, it's better than nothing.

Is this your own box you're talking about or a shared host? Sounds like a shared host else you could use something like squid which should be pretty painless and transparent to use.

I saw mentioned on the poopband site that sentech had some of their proxies configured to allow anyone to use them. What a bunch of dorks!

Try sshing into your web host and browsing from the console using lynx :) Thats when you're really desparate!

hehe - been there done that fergus !

I haven't been able to get to my gmail account since Thursday as the work ADSL is also capped !

Lynx doesn't support javascript, so I can't use that either.

You know, the more I think about what Telkom have effectively done with this cap, the more p1ssed off I get. To slow a user down to below 1kbs is just sick, it really is.
At least eek out enough speed to do things like gmail !

B@stards !

bb_matt,

At 1kbps, you should still be able to get your mail via gmail's POP service....it'll just take a really long time. When you're not capped, I suggest that you set up a mail client. I've been able to get gmail via POP after I've been capped....

thanks arf9999 - I just left it running for 10 minutes and it didn't even display the login boxes.

I've been trying to install links or elinks on my hosting account, but of course I don't have the right access to get them to work.

I got an old binary of links working, but just my luck, it didn't support SSL
